Finally took the time today to take off my BCM handguard and found a ton of carbon and a bit of surface rust. Been probably 5-6 years since I bought this upper and never cleaned under the handguard. This doesn’t need to be done a lot but if you want to take care of your barrel, do this every year or 2.

You might want to check the gas block fitment and scope the gas port for erosion.

That’s a long barrel. Be a shame if someone cut it.

How would I check all this? The gun functions fine. Honestly can’t even remember ever having a malfunction that wasn’t intentional.

I'm not saying neglect maintenance, but honestly in the grand scheme of things you could ignore that altogether and still get decades of life out of that barrel not including round count. Regularly shooting the gun will kill the barrel orders of magnitude faster than that rust.

So IMO abuse the hell out of the gun and when the barrel wears out throw a new one on and abuse the hell out of the new one.

That’s kinda my line of thinking as far as not beating myself up over waiting years to do this.

This is my home defense/carbine class rifle so it’s seen probably 5-7k rounds and still runs like a top.

Taking it apart and looking at it, it's going to be obvious because the port edges will look melted and more oval than round. Low profile gas blocks are notorious for leaking and having port erosion problems, especially aluminum and those using set screws even if the barrel was dimpled for them. Gas port erosion isn't just a function of round count but how many times you ran that rifle hard. Going to those carbine schools where you are shooting a lot and fast? Yeah, going to see increased erosion in the gas port and chamber throat, just a fact of life with AR's. The gun will function fine until it doesn't, short cycling will be the symptom here.

No offense, but you might want to correct your subject.
Biden told us those are AR-14's.

I never liked cleaning the platform. It was tedious, time consuming and ultimately felt like a poor cost/benefit investment of time, CLP and sweat.

I was routinely fussed at (by people who knew how) because of my lack of facility in that basic soldier skill.

And on my worst day, my barrel looked new compared to that one.

You assumed wrong, fudd. We run our guns hard and put them away wet.

Disclaimer: I clean my forearms regularly. Including under the handguard. I just can't publically agree with Buck.

Spray it with Barricade. It will neutralize the rust. Don't even have to take your handguard off to do it
