At some point (if I can find one reasonably priced)I would like get something like a AR-15. My main concern is what good will it do to buy if I cannot get ammo for it.

What caliber would be the best that is available? This would be used for protection.

Edit: anything but an AR12.

there is ammo available..
go to cabela's or academy in the morning..

...or search ammoseek or wikiarms (same thing..mornings tend to be better)

also...
it is ok to be on a "waitlist"....especially with certain manufacturers.
you'll get an email when it is available...

but as far as your question..
i'd prefer a AR-308 (AR-10) rifle period...and ammo in those calibers is still not that difficult to source.

for citylife.. dont ignore a 9mm carbine.
much less recoil than 5.56..and will probaly fit in your backback.

“Best” is very subjective but your second sentence describes your need. “Available” right now also varies a lot but when the market is normal, 5.56/.223 would be the best for protection and availability. Any other cartridge costs considerably more and isn’t as suited for self defense as 5.56, although others would work.

The suggestion for palmetto state armory is a good one. They restock items a lot faster than most stores so keep an eye on them or see if they will let you backorder.

I also like the suggestion for an AR10 in 308 if you wanted to hunt with it. For close-range defense uses, 308 is less than ideal. The platform is a good but heavier and the ammo weighs about 3 times as much as 5.56.

My strongest recommendation as well - get some training. I’ve worked with a lot of novice shooters but have seen some novices dive into firearms too quickly with no training. Seek it out and get some confidence in your abilities.

I have been waiting patiently to buy a stripped AR-10 lower for months from Palmetto. Their completely built lowers, uppers and parts kits prices have been creeping up for months. I hope the prices start to fall after the election!

after the election with the the christmas spending i'd expect inflation to be much more noticeable..

even IF there is less demand.. i wouldnt bet on prices to be dropping anytime soon.. on anything.

..there was mucho dollars being pumped out there with those stimulus efforts...those monies are not hiding under mattresses

Right now I have a S&W 38 Special revolver, Taurus 9MM pistol, S&W M&P Shield 9MM pistol, 3" Magnum 20 gauge pump with sawed off barrel and a 6.5 Carcano bolt action rifle.

An AR or AK style rifle would fill my void.

I do not currently own any AR platform firearms, but I figured I’d throw that suggestion out there since it was intended for protection.

Saw one once and it looked like a cool setup, or so I thought lol. My bad if I’ve provided bad info. PSA has one for like 550 so didn’t seem like a huge investment either.

Are AR-12s junk/have bad performance?

Edit: I was limiting protection to home defense in my mind, my mistake.

Why do you think a 12 gauge is better than a 5.56?

Well I wouldn’t say I called it “better”, was just making a layman’s assumption I suppose. But I mean it can’t be that far off from 5.56 when it comes to home defense huh? I’m picturing a close quarter interior type situation so I figured the 12 ga might have been an effective choice.

He just asked for AR 15 “type” rifles so I thought he was considering alternatives also, admittedly not an expert here at all.
