I was doing it for a while, got tired of being gone all the time and the a holes that would get on boat and insist on going after tuna when they weren't biting and bitch when we didn't catch any. Then get back to dock and we'd have 45-50 mangroves, half dozen mahi, some cobia and AJs, all this after they've lost a couple billfish, 9 cobia no telling on AJ, mahi and grouper and trip was bust because they didn't get any red meat.

Yeah. It's fun to charter. But the idiots you get that know everything that's going on but can't tie knots really piss you off.

My favorite "I read something the other day that says you should do ____ to catch _____." And this usually from engineers and the trip being their first or second trip.

Hahahahahaha. Yes. We had a guy one time that had read about catching mangrove on his ultralight rod with 15lb test.

That's a great way to hook them, not a great way to put them in the boat.

One doesn't try using a spec rig to sight fish big mangroves but for one fish. And that is usually a very brief encounter (voice of experience).

You've got a much better chance landing a 40# lemon with that gear than a 8# mangy.

Before circle hooks were so widespread, I used 5/0 Kahle hooks for mangroves (live croakers). I've still got a couple of them on my workbench straightened out to where you'd think they were sewing needles.

Pound for pound, they are the most ferocious fish out there in my opinion.

Meanest though is a damn trigger fish. ESP if they are still alive on your stringer.
