Just finished my first one. It was pretty simple and enjoyable to make. I used walnut and maple. Plan to do some different patterns soon.

Made a couple like this a few years ago with purple heart and maple. Enjoyed doing it, need to get back into doing more of that.

What kind of tools go in to making that? I guess you need a planer?

Planer, saw, sander, clamps and a flat surface to put it together.
Edit to add I also used a food safe varnish on it rather than oil because of the end cuts being exposed.

I used a miter saw to cut do the boards to a rough length. Ripped the board into strips using a table saw. I’ve seen videos of people who use s band saw with a fence to rip into strips. Planed it all down using my planer. Once I got good clean strips, I glued everything up and let dry over night. Once tang was done it took quite a few more passes though the planer to get everything leveled up and someone smooth. Then I spend several hours sanding it down and using a 1/8 in round over bit and my router to soften the edges a little.

That looks great. I’d like to try a pattern like that at some point. For my next one I think I’m going to do another somewhat simple design

There’s a bunch of YouTube videos to use as a guide. That’s what first peaked my interest. Then I came across i great deal on a planer which was really all I was missing

There’s a few places around the BR area that sell hardwoods. I got mine is Brazos in Denham Springs. There’s also Zachary lumber and I think some place around Br near Cortana

It really isn't much more than what you have already. Just cut strips from what you have and flip them to the cut side up and gluebir together again and plane/sand again.
