I wanted to see if it was just our land or are other people experiencing the same thing.

I have hunted this property for about 15 years and back before 5 years ago it would be nothing to see 20-30 deer a hunt with multiple rack bucks. About 5 years ago I started noticing the amount of deer and especially bucks I was seeing go down.

Then we get to last year. All year long I saw only 1 buck on camera that I would have shot(Mature, outside the ears, thick rack) and it was at night and only made 1 appearance on camera and even the does were not as many as previous years.

I just got back from checking my cameras yesterday and had over 1000 pictures from 2 cameras and only 1 buck that had a rack and it was a young 6 point.

What is going on? Is this just a problem for us or is this area going through some kind of deer herd problem.
I'm just confused and wondering if other people in the area are experiencing the same thing.

Sounds like the coonasses have invaded your deer herd. Welcome to what many hunters in Mississippi have experiences

I hunt in Jackson, LA quite often (right next to St.Francisville) and the hogs have been running deer away. Could be the same problem you are facing.

I hunt the state line on 967

Deer numbers are down big time.

Hog numbers up.

Also the maturation of the woods in the area doesn't help. Not thick like it used to be

Could be a big factor. Carrying capacity for thick cutover can be as high as 1 deer per 5 acres. Where for mature woods (especially with pine mixed in) can be as low as 1 per 30 acres.

Honesty, short of blue tongue or some catastrophic disease, I think all 3 likely culprits have been covered.

-Lack of Thick Cover
-Invasion of Wild Hogs
-Coonasses

Probably a combination of the three.

if you are hearing coyotes- start trapping-had same problem on lease- deer came back after two years of intensive killing of coyotes - big smart deer go where there is less pressure(danger) so do moms

Same problem I have noticed at our lease in tensas outside of ferriday. Used to see plenty of deer but ever since hogs took over we are struggling to see any nice shooter bucks.

Yea our deer population has really dropped of drastically in the past 5 years with the past 2 being the worst.

I was just wondering if other people were experiencing the same issue. My dad has a lease in Jackson, La. across Thompson creek from The Bluffs and their population seems to be stable and haven't seen a huge drop off.

What is best way to trap coyotes? I have them consistently on my cameras. 3-4 at a time

We hunt off of ford creek road and have this problem as well. Deer are harder to find.

I had a place off 967 in Miss, live on the La side of it and have property now that butts up to the creek that separates 967 and hwy 61

Coyotes are much worse than most people realize. A few years ago I had a stand that I had to cross a creek to get to. Crossed one evening and everything was normal. next morning the sand was disturbed and there was blood all over it. Went and investigated when it got daylight and found a 6 pt the coyotes had corned in the creek with steep banks. looked like they ran him back and forth in a 100 yard stretch and wore him down. We routinely see them during hunts and when just working on the place.

Pigs are becoming an issue as well. Before we had a random boar that would show up on cam near the west fork of Thompson Creek. Now we have resident pigs living on our place. They showed up after we select cut a portion of woods and created some thick cover.

We border several large land owners and we are all on management practices but its nothing to make several hunts in a row without seeing a deer.

I hunt Jackson, La. also, off Jones Vaughn Creek Rd. Deer population has stayed steady but hogs are every where. We don't see or here as many coyotes as used to seems the hogs have run them off??

Hunt just to the east of there off whitestown rd just south of MS line. We have been relatively the same on our kill #'s, last year was a lot harder hunting though due to the heat wave every damn wknd it seemed. Actually think we were one or 2 above our average on kills. No hogs......yet, but we don't supplemental feed corn or anything.

I always find when I see a lot of pigs on the game camera I tend to see much less deer - and vice-versa as well.
