I am currently looking for land and found a potential tract in the vicinity of Poplarville but don't know too much about the area. Just curious if anyone on the OB hunts Pearl River County. I know that the south east of MS isn't known for the type of bucks found elsewhere in the state but judging by the lack of development around the area i can't see how the hunting would be bad. Hoping there are a few hogs as well. Would love something in LA to avoid the $$ out of state license but finding something within 3-4 hours of Houma that isn't stupid expensive and is secluded enough has been a wild goose chase.

I know someone who has a place in McNeil and he's always bitching about the deer messing with his blackberry bushes. I think in his area there are good numbers, but not really many trophy bucks.

I live on the coast over here and my BIL hunts in that area. There are deer, hogs, and turkeys...though in what quantity and size IDK, depends on the ability to manage somewhat. People run dogs, so yea hopefully you wouldn't butt up to that sort of activity.

I'm coming down to Houma this weekend for a youth soccer tournament. Any interesting places to eat and drink?

We have pretty much every chain eatery you want on MLK Jr Blvd. Have a couple decent boiled seafood / fried seafood places Big Al's on tunnel blvd Cajun Critters a little further down tunnel and 1921 on Barrow. If you want a more relaxed meal with some cajun music there is the Jolly in on Barrow street and also Bayou Delight on bayou black near Gibson both have live cajun music on the weekends for supper.

Place i am looking at right now is northwest of the city of Poplarville and appears to be down a couple miles of dirt roads. looks like larger properties around that are pretty much completely wooded except for a food plots. Definitely don't want something with a bunch of red necks in trailers all around me hunting the place while i am not there.

That's pretty accurate, though some folks do take some good deer out of the area. Lots of pine forest.

I've hunted the poplarville area the last few years. You arent going to kill a trophy but you can fill the freezer with doe meat. We had tons of hogs on our property a couple years ago, they seem to have moved on, although im sure they will be back.

eta: everyone runs dogs, and they dont care where they go, probably 25% of the hunts i made got interrupted by dogs

That sucks. I would be really pissed. Honestly i don't even see the fun in running deer with dogs.

I have a place east of there in Perry County and I know a guy just NW of there in Lamar County. Like you say there won't be many big bucks, but there are deer.

Hunting pressure is key; try to find out how hard the neighbors hunt and if they are still hunters or hounders.

Yeah definitely going to have to take a ride out there and see for myself. All i have to go on right now is sat imagery. Looks like the couple thousand surrounding acres are mostly wooded with food plots here or there. Would hate to spend a shite load of $$$ and only end up with pine trees and a pond.

We got a place in NW Poplarville...what road is it off? Deer numbers have been good but bigger bucks are hard to come by. Definitely have to scout and hunt them hard to get a mature buck. Plenty of turkeys and hogs are hit or miss.

We've had a bear on our camera over the past 5yrs too

I hunt not far from there. I would be looking for empty beer cans and four wheeler tracks, and that will tell the tale. People (and dogs) around there aren't too talented at recognizing property lines. EVERYONE hunts, even if they don't have a place to. Property owned by out of towners makes a great place for kids to mudride and drink beer.

That said, you could have a great little honey hole if you can keep the tresspassers, joyriders, and dogs out. You won't kill any monsters, but the bucks that do make it past 3.5 are definitely worth shooting.

And as far as turkeys go...my dad just shot a turkey with 11.25" beard 1 1/8" spurs on Sunday. There was another 6 jakes with him too.

My camps in that area. Little less than 700 acres off of hwy 43

People love to tresspass in that area.

Been hunting that area all my life and have never owned a Mississippi license. I've never seen a game warden out there.

the game warden in that area lives down the road from us on Stanford Lake road. He's a Poplarville local. Really nice guy and seems like he tries his best with the trespassing, but we had issued a few years back as well. Not so much now. He's never bothered us once. We did run into him not too long ago and said he was retiring soon because he wanted to run for sheriff. I don't think he won, so I don't know if he went back to being the game warden.

My wife inherited a lake lot on Silver Run Lakes a couple of years ago. Part of us want to develop it for a weekend getaway/ camp, but the other part doesn't want to touch it. I'd do it in a heartbeat if I had a decent place to hunt there locally.

Went look at the property this past weekend. It would be great for a hardcore hunting tract but 2 miles of non-county maintained road coupled with not level campsite full of stumps was most of the deal breaker. No way you are getting a motorhome of fth wheel back there not to mention it was recently thinned and would be damn near impossible to bush hog in its current condition. Plenty of deer sign though.
