Anyone hunt on the ground on a WMA?
Curious. I have a few areas with good sign but no good trees to climb. There is, however, good coverage on the ground that I could make a ground blind out of natural vegetation (hell, could probably sit in the middle of a big palmetto). The regulations pamphlet states that anyone hunting from a concealed blind must display 400 square inches of hunter orange. How the heck would you go about doing that in a natural blind? Do you do it? Ever had a problem with green jeans?

I'v hunted in ground blinds on WMA before. I don't do it often (maybe in some small planted pines) but when I do I'll hang my vest either on the ground blind or tree next to the blind.

You have to put the orange on the outside of the blind

Even if I went and just sat up under a big palmetto? Just not sure how I would put something on a palmetto that you could see 360 degrees.

Just says "concealed blinds" on the ground. I would think behind a palmetto or any brush is still considered concealed. They want the orange to be visible 360 degrees. If you are wearing orange but hidden, it can't be seen Have to put it all around

It's usually better just to lean up against a tree. A ground blind can spook the deer. Now that's coming from a rifle hunter, not a bow hunter. Making a blind out of bushes and limbs, or sitting in a treetop is totally legal because it's nothing permanent. Even a pop-up blind is legal on a WMA as long as you don't leave it, but you'd likely have someone steal it before old green jeans finds it.

So haul 4 vests out there to wrap around a 6 foot wide palmetto plant?

Got it.

I wouldn't worry about it when it's just bow. I hunted on the ground Sunday.

Maybe wouldn't hurt with squirrel about to open, to put a vest above you if possible unless you're way off the beaten path.

More what I'm thinking. I'm just gonna throw a vest up there on a stick like a flag.

Lmao!

Are you talking about bow hunting? You don't need orange if it's bow only season

Not the way that part of the regs reads.

quote:

Deer hunters hunting from concealed blinds must display a minimum of 400 square inches of “Hunter Orange” or “Blaze Pink” above or around their blinds which is visible from 360 degrees.

Doesn't say anything about bow versus modern firearm. It says "deer hunters".

I'm just going to take my chances tomorrow. Not likely to encounter anyone else on a friday morning during bucks-only archery.

If I'm trying to still hunt "on the ground" I try to find a tree that's fallen over recently and get up in the "top."

You're elevated and have a seat

No orange required for bow hunting as long as no gun season is in progress
