I would personally go the 3rd week or so and try to go as long as possible, 10 days or more. The guys that go for 5-6 days OTC from out of state...it’s just not enough time. One cold or warm front and your whole hunt is wrecked, plus it’s likely gonna take you a couple days to find the elk.

Planning to go sept 15-25. Will be hunting likely 17-23

That should be peak rut. Goal is find elk and here some bugles. And survive living out of my pack for that many days.

A kill would be icing on cake.

Look at the muzzleloader dates. I’d hunt before they start.
I hunted the first week in Colorado and NM. They weren’t hot yet. More waterhole hunting then.
Elk are a lot like turkeys. They’re hot one day and not the next.

Paging Hat. He did this trip last year but I think drew a tag, not OTC. Should still be helpful though. My fingers are crossed for a Wyoming general tag on the 21st. I should have enough points to pull it.

The Wyoming Hunt is a much better plan. Going from sea level to 10,000’ and planning to pack out an 800 lb animal is a big task. A lot of Wyoming has elk at more reasonable elevations with much higher success. OTC in Colorado is hiking with your bow. You have to be an absolute beast or have a horseshoe up your butt to pull it off.

I tend to agree. We struggled with big time with the altitude this year but we did find some elk and almost got a shot

I’m not in BR but did this 4 years ago. Was the most challenging hunt I have ever done. Success rate on OTC archery on a bull is like .1%.

I’m spending the extra $$ to go on a guided hunt next time.

Looking online at archery only stats show success rate >10% on several units in 2017.

If available, ill get an either sex tag.

I dont have preference points so I'm using the OTC system for now
