re: Anyone been in the woods and had a scary experience with coyotesPosted by Chad504boy on 1/19/18 at 9:17 am to windshieldman
Shot at a big coyote at 5:15 that ran off 6 does off field. Missed. With my 6 yr old boy who’s pretty new at evening hunts. Got down at dark. Standing on road and the pack starts going nuts within 75 yds from us while we waiting to get picked up. Surprisingly he wasn’t that scared. He sure asked me why I was loading my rifle back up.

scariest canine encounter was having my son and i hunting in ground blinds about 400 yards apart and seeing two pit bulls running past where he was to right in front of me.....
coyotes do not scare me - every encounter i have had and there have been many - they run.. even from a 25lb boykin.
loose dogs, meth heads and drunk/stoned hunters scare me significantly more.

i'm 99% not scared of coyotes but i'm pretty sure coyotes are crack heads and right at dark, they all take a snort and i just can't help but question that they want to attack anything they see when they yap the way they do.

the problem with Beaux is he trusts everyone, he's a alpha male around other male dogs. But, I've never seen him around a coyote - so I don't know how he'd react

When I was about 13 we had some ducks for our pond over at our property near my house. After they were big enough, we took them out of their cage and put them in the pond. They were all eaten within the first night. My cousin and I decided that we would go get a predator call and stake out the next night with a .22 and a night vision set up. We set up a ground blind on the edge of a field near the woods and sat there for ours with that call on without seeing a thing. Around 1:00am we got bored, and my cousin started making howling noises. At first we heard some of our neighbors dogs respond. Once the dogs started howling it triggered what had to be 5-10 coyotes right at the edge of the woods about 80 yards from us. We looked at each other and said "Let's get the hell out of here!" I didn't know then that coyotes are scared of humans, so it definitely made the hair on our necks stand up.

OP Being on my hands and knees blood trailing a Bobcat through a honeysuckle thicket was my scariest moment.

Not arguing with you but the 10 : 80 is slightly disingenuous. Coyotes are only in North America. Lightning is all over the globe. There are roughly 6,000 to (by some statistics) 24,000 lightning deaths every year, ~240,000 injuries per year. 51 deaths by lightning on average in the US per year, and ~500 injuries by lightning in the US yearly.
There are only 2 confirmed coyotes deaths, and there are only 10 coyote attacks on average every year.
So you are correct in that you are much more likely to get struck by lightning, but almost 100% of the US runs this risk. There is only about 21% of the population that puts itself in situations that a coyote is in proximity and acting territorial / hunting.
So if you are a hunter / hiker you have about the same chance of being injured by a coyote as you do of being killed by lightning.

Coyotes don't bother me at all. Everytime I've encountered them, even when in a pack, they are very skittish. Feral dogs make me more uneasy. Usually some pit mix that has lost their fear of humans. Hogs make me the most uneasy. Built like a shite brick house and very aggressive.
However, the most scared I've been in the woods was when I was on my hands and knees tracking a doe through a briar patch just after dark. I was about half way through the 30yd stretch of briars when a five ft eastern diamondback slithered out about four ft in front of my face and stopped. I was able to slowly crawl backwards about a foot and then shoot it with my .357. The whole experience took about 30 seconds, but felt like forever.

When Yotes start coming out of the woods and grabbing my gun, I'm going to quit hunting.

One time in bow season was walking to our stand in the dark with my son who was 11 at the time and we started hearing growling and snarling from maybe 50 yards away. My son turns and starts running with his little 35 lb bow, so I had to go grab him real quick. And that's the only weapon I had was a bear youth bow. Another time same kid and I were walking through CRP at dusk and he leaves as I had to make a business call to Apple about my companies app. In the middle of the call I hear a full on pack of coyotes howling and coming straight for me so I tell the woman on the phone if she hears a gunshot it is because I am surrounded by coyotes. She was kinda freaked out, no dramatic end because my son heard the coyotes and came flying into the crp with the four wheeler. We are inside the MS River levee in the Delta and have a large coyote population.

Don’t worry, those are harmless, just wait a few seconds and an anvil will fall out of the sky and crush it, happens every time

Took the Boy Scout Troop up to Avondale to do a Wilderness Survival Merit Badge campout. Part of it was to spend the night in a temporary shelter that they built. The boys hiked half a mile away from the main campsite to build their shelters. About 1:00 am the coyotes started a howling party, and 20 minutes later the scouts came dragging butt back to camp. LOL, no merit badges earned that weekend.

When I was about 8 years old my dad and I had a real close call one night. Over 20 years later I realize now that for my dad, hunting was more about crushing white cans and bitching that the food plots need fertilizing than actually killing deer. So, one night after hunting little me is standing there on a powerline in the dark while he spreads triple 13. All the sudden a pack of coyotes starts up a few hundred yards away. I was scared to death but didn’t want to look like a pussy so I just stood there hoping my dad would run out of fertilizer. Then I heard it, something moving in the bushes just off the powerline. Frozen, I realize the only weapon at my disposal is a five gallon bucket. The critter gets so close I’m conivinced it’s about to pounce, and I start beating on the bucket as loud and fast as I can. As soon as I do, out of the brush jumps the biggest armadillo I’ve ever seen. He cuts a few circles and runs off. I’m still standing there holding my weapon as my dad runs up. I told him what happened and he couldn’t stop laughing. To this day he still gives me shite about it.

Walking out of Russel Sage at last light with a muzzleloader. Heard noise, looked back, group of coyotes 50 yds behind me crossing road, maybe 6-8. Cool to see.
Then 2 of them broke off, ran through woods around me, popped out on road in front of me. Looked back, the rest are on the road also, closer and moving towards me. Classic pincer move, they were clearly hunting me now. Still kinda cool to see in retrospect.
Swung that heavy arse T/C .54 caliber side lock up, BOOM flash smoke 1 dead dog, others disappeared. Still have her tail.

Can't say I've ever been scared of/by a coyote, did have a funny experience with one though.
I managed a big farm, really big, and I was in the midst of making an early spring walk across a little over 600 acres. My lab was out in the field running with me....sometimes he'd range several hundred yards away.
As I swung back towards my truck I kept an eye on him to see if he would see me and head back in my direction. He did and headed towards me at a lope.
What he didn't see was a yote running on an angle to intercept him. (He was a 60 lb Lab)
Problem was that the intercept point was about where I was standing. lol
That yote was looking at my dog and ran straight towards me. The look on his face when he looked up and saw me was hilarious. He about turned himself inside out trying to get away.

Nope never been scared of yotes
In the pitch black at 4am walking down a trail to my stand, and I flush a covey of quail that damn near waited for me to step on top of them?
Now that’ll teach you exactly what a minor heart attack feels like

Squirrel hunting once a coyote came out of nowhere and almost got my brothers little fiest squirrel dog. I didn’t see the coyote until my brother started hollering and yelling at him. It worked though. He turned back and ran away before he got the dog.
