Working on a purchase of a 2016 JKU and looking at 3-4” lifts. Any recommendations? Is a long arm lift necessary or will a short arm do the job?

Budget is around $1,500 or so for the lift itself. No major off-roading & using as a daily driver. TIA.

Yea this is my second Jeep but it’s been 10 years or so. I know about the inevitable pocket drain.

Agreed on the long arm. Just was under the impression it carried a better ride. I’ve got two kiddos to tool around so I need to make sure I put in a quality lift with proper alignment.

Don’t need a long arm with the jk.

Rock krawler, teraflex, etc... get some good shocks but you don’t need the remote reservoirs.

Oh you asking about a real Jeep. I have a fleet Jeep compass and i can tell you its a pile. Almost 60k miles so glad its about to get exchanged. Uncomfortable and I can tell something is wrong with the transmission but the dealership says all ok. Glad it aint mine!

You dont need long arm, but do need good shocks, and true dual rate springs would be best. Good luck staying under $1,500.

If you are buying a used JK ask the PO if they have changed the ball joints. Horrible design by jeep and it's not if they go out, but when. If they have not, then have a knowledgeable mechanic look at them, it can be a $1,000 job with labor.

I have an 18 JKU and I went with the 4" Mopar lift. I don't use it as a daily driver but, it drives fine. Went with 35" Toyo's for tires. It does run a little more than the $1500 you want to spend at around $2100.

What size tires are you trying to run? For 35’s you should only need one of the 2.5” kits. I’m personally a fan of Terraflex. They made MOPAR’s lifts up until 2016 when they switched to their own internally designed kits but that gives you an indication of the quality. I’d go with the one without shocks and pick up a set of Bilstein 5100’s. Should be able to come in below $1,500.

The next dollars I would spend would be on Yeti Steersmarts Tirerod and Draglink.

I like them but not practical for my likes. Maybe my wife will drive one.

I've had a Rubicon as well as its competitors. 4runners, xterras, and tbe little cheapo suzukis and geos.

I've learned a few things across all of them.

Bilstein 5100s are great shocks... With poor dampening. They make things feel springy.

Buy the best lift you can afford. It's more important than tires and wheels.

When installing the lift, replace any soon to fail components before the alignment. Save you a few bucks later on.

And lastly, unless it's for looks, a well designed rig on 31s-33s is more capable than a poorly designed one on 35s-37s.

Make sure your suspension spring rates are for what you're actually gonna do.

Didn’t know that little nugget of history on Terraflex.

Appreciate all the advice.

You can get the same effect on a short arm kit by spending $100 on AEV Geo Brackets.

Are you coming from the TJ world?

JK's have longer arms than the TJs. They do quite well with regular arms. A long arm will be out of the OP budget(There is a lot more work involved)
