Mine are normally here (South BR) and staying overnight around Jan 20th. Seen a few flying, but none stopping at houses.

Anyone else got them?

Do they migrate from another area? I'm fascinated by them because I think they are so pretty and love the noises they make.

When I'm out on my kayak on Lake Ponchartrain I feel like they swarm around me to investigate but it has been a while since I've seen them.

I'm gonna check out their Wikipedia page when I get a little more free time

They migrate to North America from Brazil, arriving as early as first week of January. They are almost totally dependent on man-made housing. They build nests in the housing, lay eggs and after hatching, they all fly back to Brazil in the summer.

The Causeway bridge is a huge roosting area where thousands gather before making the trek back to Brazil.

I remember my father trying to attract purple martins to his birdhouse while bitching about some other bird nesting there. Anybody know what that "other" bird probably was?

A couple of years ago we went and watch them one evening at the south end of the causeway. Had thousands of them coming to roost. That was something to see. Might have to go back again soon.

I usually see them around Valentines Day. Not here yet though. A couple of days with a strong S.E. wind and they should be here.

What's the best way to attract them and get them to stay if I've never had them? I realize I need to put up a martin house, but how big of one? TIA

A standard 8 room or 12 room house is fine. Many people now do just gourds or a combination of the two. Its pretty easy to get them here in Louisiana since we are so close to the coast, but they will go as far north as Canada. Many new landlords use decoys to help attract and play a recording of the Dawn Song. You can get these online and even MP3 versions. Play it outside facing up early in the morning (as early as 4:00am). It will bring them to your housing. Whether they stay is different. It is the call they make as they seek pairs or call to other Martins to come stay at the house.

They are social birds and understand there is safety in numbers and safety with humans.

I don't have any yet. I always seem to be late. Last year was March 2nd, but I saw others in the area for a month.

….also they like open area / flyways, so choose location with no close trees. Control S & S (starlings and sparrows) trap and shoot. Use predator guards on pole to keep rat snakes , squirrels, coons etc from climbing up pole. PMCA.com is excellent site for more info.

My neighbor put up a house last week. I saw my first flight in Lake Charles this morning. It was south of the Power Center on Hwy 14.
