Yesterday I pulled the trigger and ordered a Mercury four-stroke Pro XS (250).

Don't ask me why, because I have a perfectly reliable two-stroke Pro XS (250) on my boat right now. My current engine is a 2011 model with about 350 hours on it.

So please ignore my impulsive purchase and tell me if you've had a serious issues with one of these bigger Mercury four strokes.

TIA

Been running the new 4 stroke pro xs ever since it came out. Zero issues.

Motor will be good to go. Are you worried about the extra weight? What boat are you putting it on?

21 ft. Bullet. (Actually 21'-10" but they call it 21 ft. for some reason).

I was told the weight difference was 30 pounds.

Put about 500 hours or so on a set of triple v8 300s. They are awesome. Tons of torque, great fuel economy, and no real issues. Way better than the old supercharged verados.

I was always Yamaha or Suzuki guy. Would run from a Mercury and hide before it saw me. We used to call them black anchors. But I have been running a boat some here recently with trip 300 mercury’s and they are bad arse. I do not know how the longevity of them will be, but new they are awesome. (Like poster above, I also do not own them, just run them). My little Kenner has a suzuki that has been flawless, and my two boats before had yamahas that never let me down. Main thing is maintenance.

I will say this, 4 strokes do weigh more. On my kenner, because of the weight distribution, I moved my two trolling motor batteries under the bow platform, and my electronics battery under center console. Even with that it still sits slightly lower in the stern than with a 2 stroke and batteries in stern.

I was always die hard Yamaha and hated Mercury’s. These new V8 have changed that

300xs = 505lbs
300R = 512lbs

So far so good with mine, breaking prop shafts seems to be the only issue I've heard with the new v8s. I believe all the new R engines (which had the problem) now come with solid billet shafts which is supposed to fix that issue, the new R on mine is stronger and faster than any xs I had on my hull.

You’ll love the new 4-stroke compared to the 2-stroke. The torque is unbelievable. No issues here, just routine maintenance. And I don’t have to remember to top of the oil tank. Mercury did a really nice job with this motor. Congrats

Hadn't thought about that. I have a brand new AGM cranking battery (Optima Blue Top) that the dealer said would be fine for the 4-stroke 250.

I know you've done a lot of research on the lithium batteries. What have you decided for your cranking battery ?
And what about the onboard charger being able to handle different types of batteries (AGM and lithium) ?

Skegs bending or breaking and Mercury not standing behind their product. Denying claims, I know several and have seen more on the forums. Shift modules are problematic in some.

Should have wnt with a SHO.
