I guess the borders might still be closed to non-essential travel in Sept/Oct? I heard that they extended it to at least 21 August and with the wild swings with Covid, you gotta think that this might drag into duck season.

Supposed to be heading to Edmonton the first week of October but my guy hasn't asked for the money yet.

I'm planning SE of Edmonton middle October. Sitting on Go depending on if the border is open.

Last I heard it was extended to 7/21. We have a fishing trip planned to Anderson Lodge in Ontario for the third week in August. We're waiting to see if that is still a go.

We have all but written our annual trip up there off. The border probably won't be open, but our friends up there also asked that we think long and hard about coming since South Carolina is one of the leading hotspots and Saskatchewan has had very few cases. I can respect their wishes. I fear that places in the Dakotas that have seen little virus effects, will be spiking large around October because of it.

We're pretty much assuming it'll be a no go. Since I'm the youngest of the group being 66, my other buddies are okay either way. Already had to cancel a crappie trip in May down in MS.

The guys that I know that are either regulars or guides are in the same boat. They are pulling the plug. Now whether the border is actually still shut off when duck season starts may or may not have some people regretting decisions made now but I imagine that there will be a significant amount of cancellations meaning reduced pressure on ducks and geese up there this season. So, with this situation setting up to probably having a bunch more ducks/geese migrating this year, I wonder what the season will shape up like this year?

I can see it going one of 2 ways. A lot more migrating ducks means a better season for us in the South, or largely reduced pressure in Canada means ducks will hold in Canada longer if there isnt significant weather to move them.

On second thought, not sure what difference it'll really makes for the greys and teal we get on the coast since very little are targeted and shot in dry fields in Canada.

You can bet that there are gonna be some retarded young Snow Geese this year that would typically get waxed before making it into the states and it might be time to dust off the Mojo since Mallards will not be taught to flare from them starting in Saskatchewan.

If the border ain't closed I will go at least 2 weeks during the season. Southern Alberta. Knocking on doors and hauling the decoy trailer. I am assuming the border will be closed though.

I read somewhere recently that Canada had or was considering preventing foreigners from bringing anything bigger than a 20 Gauge across the border from now on. Has anyone else seen anything about that? A 20 is fine for ducks and geese in Canada as they are mostly juveniles and they are so close most of the time you gotta pick the dirt out of 'em to eat them (not exactly ground swatting but damn near it) but I shoot a lot of Cranes in AB and I don't know that a 20 will knock a pterodactyl down hard enough for me to try to pick one of the mean bastards up crippled. I won't send my dog to retrieve dead cranes 'cause they are sneaky bastards and meaner then a snake....they can and will do some serious damage with that beak.

They will short stop in the Dakotas and about the same numbers will make their way to the Gulf Coast. Maybe not but I wouldn't be surprised.

May be some chance to get some reservations at the last minute with an outfitter if the border opens up. I personally prefer DYI hunting in Canada but I only live 8 hours away so its pretty simple for me to drive up Thursday night and hunt Friday, Saturday and Sunday and come back to the house.

I like my ducks nice and fattened up. Don’t like shooting the ones with eggshells still on their bills

Problem now is if you’re south of kansas-momo-Ill-okie land you’re not going to see the green from even 10 years ago. Even the brown ducks don’t stay like they used to.

A 20 will be fine. Hell one of my buddies and his wife carried 20’s on their Tundra swan hunt and both came home with their tags filled. I will add though for a bird that size is definitely be using premium shells like the heavier than lead options like Boss etc... I don’t think I’d use my usual Rio’s in my 20 like I do for ducks and geese

There is no restriction on shotgun gauge in canada. 10 12 can still be used. There are new restrictions on AR/AK platforms and guns w bores >20mm but shotguns dont fall into that restriction

With the border closure it will be a tough yr for outfitters. they depend on Americans for their business. same w all the fishing lodges in the north

For sure, Anderson just remodeled everything this year and it sucks for them to lose the revenue.
