Never caught one..thinking about hitting Lake Borgne Saturday and just targeting them and nothing else. To try cross it off the list..Do I have a shot at one?
Always heard that...
August was peak season
Ride the traps
Look around well heads
Throw live shrimp under popping cork at them
Am I missing anything ?
*****update
Decided to push trip back to Tomorrow or Monday for reasons of wind and the Saturday crowds

Monday Aug 3
Rode what seemed like every trap in lake Borgne today at least a 1000 plus.. found one triple tail and successfully caught him! Trip was a success.. it was only 17 inches so it was a throw back but I’ve never had a better one fish day than today.

Caught a nice one in Anastasio in June while trout fishing. First one I ever saw and was able to get him to bite. Made my trip. Haven’t had many trips since then.

Any tips on fishing the rigolets? Ventured into the south side of Borgne the other week. I usually stay farther south but looking to expand my area.

In the marsh on the north side. Fish grass on a rising tide with the wind blowing the water towards it. We tried to the south later after almost limiting and didn't catch shite. Not even a bite.

I went with a guide a few years ago on a trout and tripletail trip to Lake Borgne. We ran the crab trap lines. He’d make a loop back around when we spotted one. We trolled within casting distance and would free line a shrimp. We caught several that way . I got the impression that was the normal way he fished them.

This and a good set of glasses. A lot of run and gun fishing.

Oh, calm water is a big plus to fish them. That is when one can se the finning on the surface.

Usually you don't see the big ones. Sliding cork can be your best friend in that instance.

Have not heard anything this year, but have tatooed them years ago. I agree that the best method is freelined live shrimp, no cork. They are a lil gunshy with the cork slapping when it lands. Also, if you see one on a pole or bouy marker, there is liable to be a few more on that same pole. After catching the first one the next one will swim up to the yop and be in the same position as the first, if there are a few. Lastly, do not pass any floating debris without checking it; we have caught several under a floating wax box cover, also pallets. Good luck and please give a report.

Had a good couple years a couple of years ago where we caught them a spot way east in the marsh. Haven't really fished inshore much since then but they are fun to catch and tasty as hell.

We are gonna fish Taylor Reef tomorrow outside of BSL. We will hit up some crab traps too to see if there are any hiding around there.

How did he do? What all did he catch?

We planned to get out there before 5:30.

Look for Oyster reef poles. That is where my success has been.

Dumb/uninformed question: I see all these state created "inshore reef" on the MS coast. My question is are these reefs above the waterline (rock piles) or are they all submerged? We drive the Waveland/BSL/Pass coast quite a bit on weekends and at certain spots I can see rocks sticking out above the waterline. Just wondering if all the reefs are above water.

A handful of them are, but most are not showing above water. Gene Taylor (bay/Waveland), Katrina reef (by deer island) and 1 just East of the pass harbor are the ones that come to mind that are showing above the surface.

A guy on fishing Louisiana FB page just posted a triple tail caught today. Looks like he runs out of shell beach.
