Moving to Birmingham in June for 5 years. How's the duck/deer hunting within 1.5-2 hours of there? Any must do activities? Guess I will have to dust off my old freshwater tackle.

ETA: Any differing gun laws I should know about?

Don’t live there but the Cahaba River is a nice river to fish in that area. Very scenic.

There's several large reservoirs and rivers to fish within that distance to B'ham. The Bassmaster Classic and several other big bass tournaments have been held out of Birmingham over the years. Lake Guntersville, Lay Lake, and Lake Logan Martin have been fished several times for the classic. The golf courses are phenomenal though. Ended up golfing a lot more than fishing when I lived there for a little while.

I just moved to Huntsville about 6 months ago. Every time I ask about duck hunting around here, every single person says don't even waste your time and go to Arkansas or Mississippi so I am just working on booking hunts over there this year. I will hopefully be exploring Guntersville soon for fishing since I'm pretty close to that one.

Lots of great fishing within that drive for you. Lots of solid deer hunting too. Ducks are an entirely different story. They're very hit and miss here. With a few good private holes and hunting them right you can have a fairly decent season. Decent as being 200-400 big ducks. Public is tough tough. Lots of kneebooters with very little experience educating the birds we do get. Your best bet is to go west or try to get drawn for a blind at the circus known as Swan Creek. welcome to Alabama. if you're ever up around the Muscle Shoals/Florence/Town Creek area during the winter drop me an email at my user name at gmail and we'll try to get together and kill something

Deer are extremely plentiful in the area. Fishing the Warrior River is very popular. I don’t know squat about duck hunting.

It's a crying shame, considering how good it use to be there.

Great deer hunting in that 1.5-2 hour range down in the Black Belt. Greene, Sumter, Hale Counties are all within your range. Duck hunting is not very good, but we're on the Tombigbee so actually get in a few decent hunts a year. If you like to turkey hunt, those counties are great for turkey hunting as well

I'm up in Huntsville. Guntersville, Wheeler, and Pickwick are pretty good bass lakes. I've heard good things about Lay Lake and Logan Martin too.

As far as duck hunting...I only hear about divers on Guntersville and see all the coots on there. They say there's some canvasbacks there every year, but I haven't seen them yet. Mostly ringnecks, scaup and gadwalls.
