Anybody had success hunting this way? Been hunting bow only public land and just looking to expand my options for days I want to hunt somewhere that doesn't have good trees for a climber.

The closest I’ve ever been to deer when I was bow hunting was in a tent blind. I’ve got a little trifold seat that’s pretty low to the ground, so I can draw easily and not have anything touch/make noise.

It really is a fun way to bow hunt. All of these were less than 20 yds away.

Tried it once thinking the blind would help hold in scent. Yea right. I think the deer were laughing at me as they ran away.

I started bow hunting out of ground blinds this year. When hiddden properly, the deer do not seem notice. I have yet to see one come in and start looking skiddish. I hunt public land here too, but use the climber for that. Unfortunately leaving ground blinds or lean-to’s in the public lands would not be the best options these days as people have no respect for others property.

i bow hunt in north texas and this is the only way i hunt. not enough tall trees on our lease to hang a lock on and mesquites arent really climber freindly. IT can be very exciting because you get so close with the deer, but you will get busted every now and then. hunt the wind and wear all black to blend in with the background of the tent. wear gloves and a facemask as well. good luck, it can be very exciting.

also dress up the blind with some downed branches to blend it in. i like to put mine next to a cedar tree to help with scent control.

Never tried it on public land because I think you have to give deer time to get acclimated to them. Mine was set in place weeks before season started. Pay attention the wind and utilize corners and shadows to make sure you aren’t silhouetted between open windows. I don’t get busted nearly as much as I did from a stand. I don’t care what they say, deer do look up and they do realize when a new 200lb something perches in their living room. How long would it take for you to realize there was a guy sitting on your sofa even if he were dressed in the same colored upholstery.

Yeah. Taking a picture.
I just let the flash do it’s thing, and I didn’t move the phone. They flinched, but didn’t leave. Probably thought it was a game cam.

Not to mention the fact that you can't leave a blind out. If I'm reading the regulations correctly anyway.
quote:

Construction of and/or hunting from permanent tree stands or permanent blinds on WMAs is prohibited. Any permanent stand or permanent blind will be removed and destroyed. A permanent blind is any blind using non-natural materials or having a frame which is not dismantled within two hours after the end of legal shooting time each day. Blinds with frames of wood, plastic, metal poles, wire, mesh, webbing or other materials may be used but must be removed from the WMA within two hours after the end of legal shooting time each day.

Which sucks. That's why I just brush up some areas with natural vegetation, using the existing vegetation as much as possible.

You're correct on state WMA's, but some federal NWR's do allow you to leave a portable stand/blind out all season as long as you tag it with name, phone #, etc.

True. I'd still be wary as frick about leaving one out. I don't trust people to not mess with my stuff if unattended.

Anyway, something I saw yesterday that perplexed me. This fella was hunting in a ground blind in the middle of a field on a WMA. It was so obvious, I saw it from the parking area.

I mean, maybe he's had success, but doesn't seem like a good way to see deer to me. Maybe he was targetting hogs. Either way, this ain't private land in south Texas.

I say a small payer every time before I climb it but I have seen more deer than any other stand I've ever hunted. They feed right under me and never have a clue.

Killed a nice 120" 8 point out of it this year

Harder in our experience to kill them from ground blind as opposed to being up in a tree. That being said, the longer the ground blind is in place, the better chance you have. My daughter killed her first from a ground blind, but it has been in the same location for years and is brushed in. We got busted in one early in the year that had only been in place a couple weeks. The deer were wary the whole time at that one.
