I see Savage has a newish semi auto. Kinda want? Do you guys squirrel hunt with it? Is there ammo in stores? Likes/dislikes?

Not exactly answering your question but you can absolutely find .17hmr in stores regularly.
I have the ruger.17hmr and love the gun. It side ejects and the barrel (?) magazine mounts flush with the bottom of the rifle.

Yeah, only interested in the 2.
Yes I have Savage bolt action in .17 Mach 2 that I purchased specifically for squirrel hunting and though I like the rifle and round for that purpose unfortunately ammo manufacturers do not make a solid core lead bullet for the .17 Mach 2 for small game like squirrels, at least I’ve not been able to find one. If that’s an issue for you then consider the .17 HMR or .22 where solid core lead bullets are readily available.
I have about 500rds of .17m2 that I bought thinking I'd buy the gun later. Thats been probably 10 years ago and I haven't bought the gun yet. Was worried a bit that they may completely quit making guns chambered in M2 and got cold feet. Guess I need to either shite or get off the pot.
I own a 17Mach2 which is ideal for squirrel hunting. You’re gonna have a hard time finding ammo on shelves. Eley use to make the most accurate ammo; however, they quit production several years ago.
Several rifle manufacturers discontinued the 17M2 resulting in less ammo being produced and shipped to stores. IMO, the 17M2 will eventually have the same fate as the 5mm Remington . If you find some ammo in stores or online, buy all you can afford

GB is pretty much spot on w/ his assessment. Yes, you'll have problems finding ammo so get plenty of it when you do buy it and gradually build a stock pile in case the M2's ever discontinued. Although you'll see a number of different brands of M2 ammo, it's ALL made by CCI. I also agree that the M2 is the ideal ideal rifle squirrel hunting round for the still hunter. It's flatter shooting than the 22 LR yet doesn't damage the meat too badly, even w/ plastic tip bullets. OTOH, in the experience of me and my hunting buddies, the 17 HMR damages the meat too badly. I've heard 17 FMJ are okay on squirrels, but I've never shot them. My 17 Mach 2 is a Savage bolt action. I don't like the cheap sheet metal mag, but it works well. Like the 17 HMR, 17 Mach 2 ammo is generally more accurate and higher quality than most 22LR ammo. Both 17's are very susceptible to the wind.
I still like my 22LR's for certain applications. A few months ago I bought a Tikka T1x that I'm looking forward to using w/ a suppressor.
Keep us updated.

I have a Ruger 77/17 Mach 2 with vortex scope and had the barrel fluted to lighten it up. After market trigger think it’s Rifle Basix. Same hole gun at 50 yards. CCI makes all ammo no matter the name on the box.
When you find it on sale like the previous post noted then buy all you can afford.

Went to Walmart just to see what Savage models they had. Thought many would get a kick out of this

Well, it IS a Marlin! Does this mean all Marlins have "clips" instead of mags??

Placed my order at lunch. Should be in Friday. Will plink a little during the dove hunt. My store has the ammo.

Not sure what my store has. Owner mentioned a Nikon. Hope it's 3X9. I get pretty damn close to squirrels.
Security SG ? I was in Ellick today at M Losavio’s office providing Voc rehab services to an injured worker

I put a Leupold 2x7 on my .17 HMR for that very reason. I wish they made a 1x8 that was more affordable. When you are in thick woods, trying to find a squirrel in your scope at 15 yards, the lower the power the better. And 7x is plenty scope for any shot I want to make on a squirrel at a longer distance. Even using 20gr FMJ ammo, the .17 HMR is a head shot round or there won't be a lot left to eat. A consistent 50 yard head shot is doable with a 7x scope. Likelihood of shooting or seeing a squirrel further away than that is rare in my neck of the woods.
