and he was a felon with a gun

quote:

CONCORDIA PARISH- A man was arrested earlier this week for allegedly killing a Louisiana black bear. Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries agents arrested 28-year-old Ronald Kimble on Jan. 8. Kimble is accused of killing the bear during a closed season. On Nov. 28, agents began investigating a dead black bear that was found shot to death in the Richard K. Yancey Wildlife Management Area. A necropsy revealed that the female bear had been shot twice with a rifle within a few days of being found. Agents began patrolling the area the bear was found more frequently and found Kimble hunting in the area on Dec. 29 and again on Jan. 4. Authorities say that Kimble admitted to killing the bear with a .270 rifle on Nov. 26. Kimble, according to a release, is a convicted felon and not allowed to possess a firearm. The state charge for illegally killing a Louisiana black bear brings a $900 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in jail. A photo of Kimble was not immediately provided

The most shocking part is that someone can make it to 28 years by being that stupid. I'm impressed.

The state should be comparing hunting licenses to felony convictions and investigating if they are hunting with a firearm...

I though felons aren't allowed to own a firearm outside of a muzzleloader? Or is that a state rule and only certain felons? 120 days and $900 doesn't seem like a big enough penalty to me.

I wonder why he killed it. Sounds like he either got scared and shot it and realized he knew he didn't really have to or he got mad it ruined his hunt and shot it. I would think better of him if he had at least been eating it.

Considering he's a prior felon and let it lay, im guessing he shot it just for the hell of it to kill something because he's an idiot.

I hunt on WMAs, but there should be an online test/ refresher to be able to hunt on WMA that has to be passed every year. LDWF should edit the info/ test each year to use it to pass knowledge onto hunters and stress the importance of what is the department is stressing/ enforcing on a given year...

Wildlife population in LA on WMAs would explode.

Thought it was at least Mandatory 5 years to be in possession of a firearm with prior conviction

This is interesting language. While trying to find law on the deer tag issue, I noticed that bear is in the hunting statutes. Looking like they are anticipating a season.

Felon in possession of a firearm is a federal charge unless the feds don't pursue and the state picks it up. No knowledge of this particular case but perhaps La is just hitting him with his state consequences and letting the feds have him on the gun charge.
