I'm planning a pronghorn hunt in New Mexico this year. I'll be using a .300 Win Mag (overkill, I know) but trying to decide what ammo to use out of these two options:

Norma Whitetail 150 gr
Barnes TTSX 180 gr

I'm leaning pretty heavily towards the Barnes simply for the better ballistics/BC due to the possibility of longer shot distances and winds out on the plains.

I don’t think it matters with a .300 win mag on a pronghorn. I’d take which ammo shot better groups out of the gun.

Anything you would use on whitetail

I know both would kill pronghorn easily, they have a reputation of being pretty soft.

My rifle shoot both rounds well, though I have never shot groups with them at any real distance. That may become the deciding factor.

The 150 grain would drop maybe 1.5" at 300 yards. That seems manageable on a animal that size

Whichever one shoots better. I always like the heavier ones.

Those two have different ballistics. Go with what you’re sighted in with.
Practice out to 400 yards.

no. it would drop 6.7" from a 200 yard zero. More if you're not getting the velocity printed on the box.

You're right, would help if I could read a graph correctly.

I'm going to have to get dialed in with either one to get zeroed out at 200 or so, and I'll be practicing for sure!

no, I have one myself. But I shoot the .300 better. I'll probably bring my .270 as well just in case. Or I can bring the OB's favorite, a .243

I either take my 270 with 130g Barnes X

Or 25-06AI with 117g vital shocks.

The 150. You can reach out further with it. Pronghorn shots tend to be really long.

I've killed them with a 270. In Wyoming, that's the preferred caliber.
