I'm looking for recommendations on an affordable out of state duck hunting trip somewhere north of Louisiana. Somewhere where the season is open in October. I've heard Kansas is great but all of the outfitters seem to charge $300-$350 a day and that ain't happening. I'm looking to get a group of buddies together next year and hopefully take one hell of a road trip. Maybe some public land somewhere? Or some cheaper guided trip options? I'm all ears to any recommendations you guys have.

I know some friends went did a week long trip in North Dakota on all public lands and by asking around locally for places to hunt. Still believe between licenses and all expenses it was around $750 a person.

I have been on guided waterfowl hunts the last 4 years, and we are going back to Oklahoma in January. Imo, $300 /day is well worth the money. The knowledge, access to land, miles of scouting and equipment a guide provides is worth every penny.
That said, if you have all the gear to diy, then go for it. There are a few outfitters that will provide lodging, land and maybe a scouting report, but you have to have all the decoys, layouts and a-frames. They hunt alot more dry fields, so socks, sillouttes or full bodies are the way to go. We dont have that, so we opted to go with a fully guided service.
180 Outdors does the diy style hunt. We had contacted them. They were cool, but we just don't have the gear.
Tornado Alley and Finish Line Outdoors are the 2 guide services I have used. I highly recommend both.
I am not sure Kansas or Oklahoma open as early as October. You may need to check on that.

Affordable should never be mentioned with duck hunting, ever.

I’ve done both in recent years. KS would be doable provided you have the gear. But you’ll damn near need to have one guy scouting ahead of you to stay on birds thru entire trip.

Oklahoma open as early as October

The panhandle opens 10/15 usually and runs on an uninterrupted 90 day season. It's also 6 mallards.

Zone 1 (NWOK but not the panhandle) in OK opens the last weekend in October as well. 5 mallard area.

For both, you're probably not going to find good mallard numbers until later in the season though. You can still find birds, but they will be probably heavy gwt and gadwall from my experience.

What did your days consist of with Finishline? Morning duck/Afternoon Geese? Or is it a single price for just one hunt a day?

I went to SD this past December and had morning duck (shot 4 limits of mallards a day) with upland In the afternoon for 700 a day including lodging and meals at High Prairie Outfitters.

We did morning geese with an option for evening mallards for an extra $100/man. They only took us one evening and they didn't charge us. The bird showed up about 10 minutes after legal shooting time. He said he wasn't charging us to bird watch.
We killed around 50 geese and 30 ducks over our 3 days. We killed 36 geese and 14 widgeon on the first day.
Finish Line is $400/ day, with the evening option, $300 without. No meals included, just lodging.
I am hoping this year we get on some cranes.
