I have a 2017 Tundra 4x4 and my stock BFG AT KO2s (285/55r20) with about 45k miles on them. Tread is wearing, but are technically still legal. Tires are at 8, 7, 7, and 5.5/32nds. Every Christmas we take a road trip to visit family in Colorado Springs. Occasionally (like last year) it snowed on us from TX/NM border basically all the way thru Pueblo. The entire week we were in CO there was ice/snow. We drove to Winder Park, Rocky Mountain National Park, and up to 11,400ft on Pikes Peak, no issues with slippage in 4HI. Last year CO changed their laws regarding tread depth for tires when them implement their 'Traction Law'. The new depth on tires is now 6/32". Texas law is still at 4/32".

Would you all consider getting new tires before the trip or just use caution and get another year before replacing them sometime in 2021?

I would not run tires that low

I’m very conscious about my tires. Most important safety device on the vehicle after brakes imo.

I know those BFG KO2s aren’t cheap, but by that time I’d guess they’d definitely be too worn.
Just you? Or family too? That would also influence my decision.

Replace them around Thanksgiving. At least get a few more months out of what you have.

Thanks for the replies. I was leaning towards replacing them. I like the idea of waiting until Thanksgiving to get a little more use out of them.

Anyone have other tire suggestions or just stick with the KO2s? Other than our yearly trip to CO with snow, everything else is pavement or occasional dirt/farm roads.

Duratracs. They will outperform them in snow and outlast them on pavement down here.

Nowhere in Colorado gets close to island park Idaho in annual snowfall.

This is from the cabin ay the beginning of the year.

ETA: stack coupons buying off eBay from discount tire and you can get them below dealership cost.

I paid under 675 for 4 285/75s

I'm a cooper AT3 fan. I've only had them in snow a few times but they did fine. Really with what you described your use you may not even need an AT tire at all depending on how bad/frequent your farm roads are. Agree with replacing in november.

I've ran these on 6 trucks over 15 years and love them. Have had them on the ice, snow, mud, slick boat ramps and the highway. I drive 30K-40K miles per year. Regularly get 70K out of a set on a 1/2 ton truck.
Holler at Area Wholesale in BR. They distribute Coopers to most shops in the area and also do install onsite. Good people.

Change them before you go. Replace with TOYO Open Country AT or RT

New Toyo AT3 is supposed to be better in the snow.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Based on cost, tire size, and my typical driving conditions I think Im going to get the Cooper AT3s. Upsize a hair to 275/60R20 and it'll save several hundred over the KO2s.

Appreciate the advice!
