Looking for any good news or bad news from previous dachshund owners. Me and the wife are looking to get our first puppy together before kids come into the picture.
I've heard back problems, stubborn, bark alot.
Also heard very loyal, funny, affectionate, well around kids.
Looking for a short hair brown/red. Also advice on male or female?
Thanks

My parents got a dachshund a few years ago and she is the sweetest most loving dog there is.
She gets nervous around big dogs who hover over her and she will often bark and growl at then if they don't leave her alone.
She barks incessantly at the front door if she sees someone walk by. It's really my only gripe with her. Otherwise she does not bark.
Keep the dog thin! If you can keep the dog in shape about 10lbs you will save thousands on back issues in the long run. And try to keep them from doing unnecessary jumping.
She does have an excited bladder problem but that's pretty common in small dogs.
All in all she is a great and unbelievably loving dog

Seems to be luck of the draw or maybe trianing. My dachshund was chill and didnt care about anything but sleeping. Cousin's dachshund was aggressive towards strangers and barked non stop.
I would look into a full sized wire-haired dachshund for a blood dog is you hunt. They are one of the top breeds for tracking.

Why a dachshund? There are plenty of other dogs that fit your wants and are more manly like Shi Tzu's, Poodles, peek-a-poos......

We have a miniature long hair female.
No back problems, but hard to potty train and can be very stubborn.
A natural born hunter and killer. Rats, squirrels, lizards, anything he size or smaller she will hunt and try to kill. Will sit at the bottom of an oak tree for hours just for one chance at a tree rat. Good thing she is an inside dog and has never caught one :)
She is funny and very affectionate.
Also, by size, she is much smaller than the lab and sheep dog she lives with, but she absolutely rules the roost dog wise.
I would be wary about getting one and then having a baby. In general, they are very smart and can have an attitude. Might get jealous of a new baby and snip at it.

She pees a lot in the house or when she gets scared which is a lot. Had to do a 3k surgery because she was paralyzed from a common back problem. Decent amount of barking. She's defiantly a loving dog though.

Don't do it. I love and hate ours so much. She barks at everything. Pisses on everything that's not made of hardwood. I cant wait to get another big dog. (My lab passed away a couple years ago)
She was a much better dog when he was still alive fwiw.

What you've heard is pretty accurate imo.
We had a double dapple mini female, beautiful dog.
To go along with the stubborn, ours was VERY DIFFICULT to housebreak.
I've had dogs all my life, have housebroken shepherds, hounds, labs, airedales with minimal trouble.
Our Dachshund was just getting housebroken at two when she died. (See "stubborn": she protested being kenneled by eating the towel that was on her bed, whose fibers sawed her guts in two.)
If she were kenneled at night, or shut up she would literally bark all night.
They can be great dogs, my wife would dearly love to have another. I refuse.
eta totally agree with the three previous posters.

My brother has had 2 and one was very noisy and barked at everyone who came to visit, peed on the floor when excited, and had horrible breath. It died of old age.
The other is super sweet, barks only when someone shows up then stops. She may pee a little when excited. This one had kidney stones and needed a back operation to deal with hip paralysis. Easily a $5K dog now....

The dog will love you but be obnoxious towards others. Probably aggressive too. You can find a better lap dog/ family pet IMO.
Also. They’re small and some may require manually draining their anal glands. Which is not fun.

Don't get a male, well don't get one period.
My parents/ sister have had a couple and so have some friends of ours'. They are all the same.
Bad at barking at everything, and at all times of the day.
Males piss everywhere, especially when they get scared. They bark at the mail man, you yell at them, and then they piss themselves.
When my parents grass would get long they won't go to use the bathroom, so they piss and crap on the patio next to the grass. Can't blame them not wanting their dong to rub the grass but come on.
They are very good dogs to your family, but they can be very protective. Regularly would bite other dogs and people they didn't know. My parents dog had multiple scars on his head because he'd bite at other dogs who would eventually get annoyed and bite back. Dummy never learned.

I love my dachshund.
Would have never guessed that.
My wife has had 2. We are on #3. Pretty cool little dogs but they do bark and can have back issues but overall, I have liked ours.

We currently have 2 long-haired miniature dachshunds, one brown and one blonde, and they are great companions when they get past the puppy stage. As puppies, mine were difficult to potty train and had accidents in the house for a long time. I know back issues are a common thing with them because of their body shape, so if you have stairs in your house, try your hardest to take them up and down stairs, rather than let them do it themselves. Stairs are one of the worst things for dachshund backs.
Mine are extremely loving and will always bark and pitch a fit when I get home. It's a happy fit though, not an annoying-barking fit. We sometimes have trouble with them barking at other dogs, but not so much people.

Had one years ago. He would hump EVERYTHING... pillows, stuffed animals, etc. He also squirted piss all over the place when he got excited... like when I'd walk in the door after work. He was also a racist dog. Some black kids lived in the condo across from ours and we couldn't let him outside if they were out there. He never even barked at a white person but when he saw those black kids he'd lose his shite. He dug a hole under our fence and got out and ended up getting hit by a car. The neighbor lady said she saw it happen and he was chasing the black kids across the street as they were walking to school.
tl;dr - they are racist little bastards

I'll reiterate as others have said. They can be very good dogs for the right family but do come with some issues. They are indeed barky dogs and more often than not I find them yapping at outside noises. They are extremely loyal animals, almost to a fault. I have heard stories of them getting overly attached to one particular family member and become territorial to that person in regards to other family members. If you plan to have children while the animals is still around you may want to consider that.
They really enjoy hunting so dont be surprised to see them chasing down and barking at lizards and birds. They can be aggressive to strangers (like many dogs). As a veterinarian I have had several try to bite me, and many that are happy and friendly as can be. Socialization at young age can help with that.
The biggest thing you may want to consider is the back problems others have mentioned. The commonly have problem with the inter-vertebral discs. Supporting their back as much as possible helps prevent problems. No jumping up and down couches, helping them with stairs, walk with a harness not a collar, keeping them at healthy weight (they shouldnt look like a sausage). Despite as much as you support them though they can still have problems. If they do have a disc rupture or bulge, then by the time diagnostics and surgeries are done it could be 3-5k to resolve, with no guarantee another disc may have a problem later.
Like I said a good dog for some but a lot to consider. I hope this helps some.

We had 2 (sequentially), although the second one was almost 100% my sister's dog. The first one was all mine.
Dachshunds are a strange mix of hound and terrier. They can be aggressive and stubborn. They nip or outright bite (ours did - bit me even, although I could tell it was reluctant). I never saw any aggression towards small children - there was a docility even.
They're fun, though. Fritz wasn't scared of anything bigger than him. Smaller? He didn't want any of it.
I would go short haired and red. I think that's the best type.

don't get a dachshund. my wife's dog is easily the worst dog i've ever come across.
i can attest to this. i've been bitten hard enough to draw blood and leave serious bruises by my wife's dog because i sat too close to her, because we were play fighting, because i leaned over to give her a kiss while she was sleeping, etc.
yeah this too. Oscar is so stupid that no matter what we've ever tried we can't stop him from running so hard that he slides into things, or jumping off beds or the back of the sofa, etc. that he had to have this back surgery a few years ago. my wife and I were broken up at the time this happened so i really had no say in it and no real idea of how much it cost but it was in this range. it was $3-5k for a 50/50 shot at being able to walk. South Paws did a great job because now he does all the same dumb shite that probably caused it in the first place and he still can't be stopped. this happened when he was 5 and he's 12 now and is still as energetic as ever. he's probably got a bunch of years ahead of him unfortunately.
i'm sure it's just this one dog but he's just extremely stupid. he's a smart dog, but he does the absolute dumbest shite. if i stare at him for too long he freaks out and starts barking at me. same if i point at him. don't get a dachshund.

Well I gotta admit this was kind of a ball buster. I was excited.
I really do appreciate all the honesty. I've been around two in my life and they have been fantastic. I guess that's why I was stuck on one but I can see the downside. My biggest complaint is shedding. I can't think of another dog in that size that looks cool but doesn't shed.
