I'd never choose a Lews over Abu. I prefer any of the Abu's I've owned over any of the Lews I've owned. That being said, both are good brands. The brand isn't this guy's problem here. Its the model, I believe. SilverMax is like the cheapest of the Abu's. If he plans to use this reel regularly, I'd upgrade to at least the Promax. I really liked my Promax, but I stepped on it and broke it. I replaced it with an Abu Orra. Its a nice reel, as well.
If he were to go with a Lews, and wanted one on the cheaper side, I'd suggest the American Hero Combo. Good combo for its price, for sure.

Sounds like the AR bearing/assembly may be upside down. Normally I'd say "just fix it" but as it is a new reel, bring it back and get a new one.
also, look at the Shimano NASCI reel while you are there. Might be better to exchange for one of those instead.

For an extra $13, I can pick up a Penn Battle II 3000. I see conflicting reports on the Silvermax, and now I’m concerned with its durability.
Shoot the Shimano would be a $20 price increase. That’s not bad at all.

I think you shouldnt worry about the brand as much as the model. an $80 penn wont necessarily perform better or last longer than a $60 Abu or Lews.

If you exchange for same reel, take the spool off the fubar one and you're back in bidness. FYI, 10# braid may not be the best for your reel. 20# is the lightest i will spool on a spinner.

I would go with Lew’s. Their customer service is top notch! They have replaced rods for me no questions asked. Sent wrong rod and told me to keep it and still send the correct rod. Hard to find service like that these days.
