Just bought an Abu Garcia Silvermax SMAXSP30 reel on an All-Star 6’10 medium fast classic rod. I put spider wire 10 lb braid on it. I’m trying to catch specks and reds and other inshore fish.

The reel has an anti-reverse switch, although it is broken or somehow non-existent. If I turn the anti-reverse off, I can reel in either direction (in or out) and I get no drag from the line. When I turn the anti-reverse on, I can reel only one direction (out), and the line goes out rather than being reeled in. With the anti-reverse switch on, I can just pull the line out with no resistance/drag.

Did the associate at Academy do something wrong? Did he somehow spoil it backwards? I don’t get how this has happened.

Did I do something wrong? I have a couple days to get this fixed, but I could sure use some help. This is perplexing and frustrating, and I really appreciate the help.

Sounds like you got a lemon. I’d just return it and try another one.

Or you could try to troubleshoot it. This should help

ETA: there’s also plenty of YouTube videos on fixing anti reverse problems.

I am going to return it. That begs the question: should I just upgrade to a Penn, Lew’s, or Shimano instead of getting a new Abu Silvermax?

Chances are you just got a lemon and the next one will work as it is supposed to.

If you are just learning, a correctly functioning Silvermax or Blackmax will be just fine.

Do you have the reel upside down and are you reeling it backwards?

I do not. The anti-reverse is operating in reverse. Based off of the comments in this thread, I’ll just trade the defective reel in rather than upgrade to another brand.

Thanks y’all

All the major brands are gonna have some issues at that price point. It kinda is what it is. The next one you get will probably be fine.

But if you want to step up to the GOAT sub $100 reel, that would be the h2o express mettle.

Why did you buy a reel you know nothing about?

Sounds to me they put the line on Backwards, maybe they spooled it with out it on the
Reel And just got it turned around.

Daiwa has the best reels for the money in spinning.

There's really no need for an anti-reverse feature on a freshwater reel.

I bought it because it was on sale and I wanted to upgrade.

Is it possible they spooled it backwards? What would that have to do with the reel going out when I reel in rather than retrieving?

The last reel I had spooled at Academy has worked just fine.

Thanks for the help.

Also, their Maxim Spinning Reel is solid.
