Do you want to Conceal Carry or not?
The answer to this question dictates the selection process.

Definitely not this.
You need either a full size or compact but definitely don't go subcompact for what you listed in the OP
agree on both....Glock 17 be your best bet, MAYBE at 19
Springfield XD, Sig 226 and VP9 from there

The Browning Hi-power is a classic, but you'll spend nearly $1K and it will be difficult to find.

I love my Canik Elite SC

too many people overlook Ruger's options. They are much easier on the budget than some of the newer flashier models out there and have reputation of reliability. A Ruger SR9c was my first gun and it's one I'd not ever sell.
I've since become a bit of an FN fan boy. They aren't budget friendly but they are very well made and fit my hand better than any other brand I've tried.
Avoid any subcompact pistol until you learn how to handle a full size. Not that they are any more unsafe, but a full size will let you focus more on proper grip, handling, sight picture, and general use without having to adapt to the small dimensions of the subcompact. Not to mention, full size pistols are inherently more accurate thus giving you more confidence in your newly developed skills.

Glock 45 is what you're looking for.

couldnt stand how glocks fit and felt in my hand
i got a full size S&W M&P and i absolutely love that gun, it feels so natural in my hand and nearly aims itself when i shoot
as mentioned, go to the range and try several out to see what fits you and your shooting style the best

Same here. Not for me.
If I’m not worried about spending a little more I’d buy the Walther. It’s a beauty.

I bought a Canik TP9 in January and it has easily become one of my favorite pistols in the safe.
Great value too. I love my HK VP9, but getting that Canik for nearly $375 less I was shocked at how good it was when I shot it the first time. I didn't expect much due to the deal I got in it. I've been recommending it to anyone who will listen since I've shot it a few times. Great gun for the money.

Depends on your budget and what you mean by self-defense.
Home defense only - full size pistol
Low $ - S&W SD9, Taurus G3
Med $ - S&W M&P, SARS-US 9, Springfield XD
High $ - Glock 17, Sig P320, Springfield XDM
Conceal carry only - compact or sub
Low $ - S&W Shield, Taurus G2C/S, Taurus G3C/S, Ruger EC9
Med $ - same as full size but compact or sub versions + PSA Dagger
High $ - Glock 19/26/45, Sig P365, Springfield Hellcat
Both - compact

I have a beretta 92 fs, and of all my handguns, it’s the one gun I cannot master. However, my sons can shoot it quite accurately.

CZ 75. I have plenty of guns, nothing feels better in my hands than my CZ 75

If possible buy via a private sale with no paperwork, that way the man won't have a record of you owning it.

I'm a fan of Walther pistols.
Own a Creed, P99, and PPQ.
PPQ is the best pistol I have ever shot.

This^^^ for your stated intended use Get the CZ compact version 75 PO1 (Omega trigger version) or the 75 PCR Compact (aluminum frame) . They're listed as compacts but are larger than the current norm for compact pistols. Legendary ergonomics, great accuracy and are at a very reasonable price point.
They're hammer fired DA-SA and have great triggers that get better over time. I a custom shop 75 P01 Omega (allows you to change to either a decocker or manual safety) and run it with the decocker mostly.
If you want a striker fired then the CZ P10 Compact Optics Ready.

I shot a beretta apx full size the other day and really liked it. it felt better than my glock 19x tbh. cheaper gun.
