6.5 Creedmoor

Want to purchase this rifle for wife (no pics) and son (6). Unsure of brand but from the reviews it seems to be a tack driver from 200yds+. Was considering 7mm08 but some say that the Creedmoor is the way to go. Obviously looking for low recoil at this stage. Anyone have experience to share (good/bad). TIA

I was in your situation a couple months ago. Here is my thread asking the same question. I ended up with a 270 Weatherby Select Series on sale from Walmart for my soon to be 13 year old son. He shoots it like a champ. I like the way it shoots that I found another one at Walmart for me.
I was all set to go with a 7mm-08 until that sale came available.

Can’t go wrong with either one. I will say I have heard a lot of hype about the 6.5 creed but it’s mainly all about accuracy. My favorite cartridge is the .264 win mag but I tend to like things that aren’t the most popular but will pick up something that is all the rage. With that being said I did have a fully custom gun built in 6.5 creed and it’s a blast to shoot.

The only downside really is that the ammo may not be as readily available but that seems to be changing quickly.
6.5 cm is a great round. I can shoot mine (AR) more accurately that I can shoot my bolt action .308 or the gun that my 6.5 cm barrel is on when it was a .308.
The cartridge is pretty similar to the .308. The 6.5cm shines at longer ranges however.

Low recoil-6.5CM but its not that big of a difference if you use the same bullet weights.
If you are only shooting to 200yds then either one would work. If you are shooting long range, check the twist on the 7mm-08. If its a 9 twist it will beat the 6.5 because you can use heavier bullets but other wise, the 6.5 will win.
Im thinking about the same thing for my wife and kids but Im leaning towards the 7mm-08. I reload and 308 brass is readily available, 7mm bullets have tons of options, and Im planning on getting a 7mm RM for myself, so I could buy 120gr TTSX bullets for both and be done.

I'm sure the Creedmoor is a good cartridge, but I hate it. It's just the newest fad right now. Maybe it will last, but it doesn't do anything that other cartridges haven't done before it.

.243, 6.5 creedmoor, 7mm-08 and the 308 all share the same case. They are just necked to accept different bullet diameters. I would suspect that at whitetail hunting ranges you would be hard pressed to see much performance differnce between the 6.5 and 7 mm

One of these is not like the others...... The 6.5 is based off a .30tc. Regardless I do like the Creed but it does nothing hunting wise that a 7mm-08 can't do. I still prefer the 7mm-08 for a purely hunting round. With that being said you really can't go wrong with any of those you listed other than the .243 would be my last choice that you listed. I will say this last weekend I let my soon to be 5 yr old shoot my 6.5 HMR and he had a blast with it. Its a heavy rifle so recoil is next to nonexistent. That caliber is hard to beat for someone just getting introduced to shooting simply because of its low recoil

I went with 6.5 Grendel, because I wanted to stay in the AR platform. Low recoil and a small, light package. Can't wait to try it out this year.

Yeah it’s a pretty popular round these days but you do realize how much research goes into developing long range cartridges like this, right? It’s not like a subjective thing. For what it’s designed to do it’s a fantastic round.

Don't forget the non-hipster version of the 6.5, the underrated 25-06. I say this not because I really know much about cartridges, but because I have one. And, the reading I've done after it was given to me suggests it performs pretty close to the 6.5 creedmore.

Was on my short list, until I killed 2 deer with my AR last season. Then I knew I wanted to keep hunting with it in a more deer-worthy caliber and not buy a whole new rifle. Definitely a caliber that shouldn't be overlooked.

I agree but I think it will stick around for awhile. Its pretty efficient for long range but other calibers can compete with it. Like you said, Its just the newest fad so anyone that gets one thinks they now have a 1000yd rifle when the truth is, any center fire cartridge from 223 on up is capable of 1000yds.
In fact the top 4 shooters in the PRS last year used 243 and 6.5cm. They were equal. 1st place 6.5cm, 2&3rd 243, 4th place 6.5cm.
Its all personal preference because it doesnt do anything better.

I just bought one.
I wanted a 7mm-08. I wanted a Bergara Rifle. Bergara doesn't chamber a 7mm-08.
I bought the 6.5 and I'm not looking back. The round is more than adequate for responsible hunting of whitetails out to several hundred yards.
The rest is just noise.

Bootlegger keep us updated on how that Grendal performs. I’m very close to buying an upper to replace the 300 blk my young un has been shooting

Here is the ballistics using the same exact bullet.
The 7mm-08 out performs it. But you cant go wrong with either one at 200yds.
