May have been the best hunt of my life. Me and Infidel Lite in a two man ladder. I'm looking to the right, over his head to an area a cat squirrels squeeling, hoping he's telling on something. I see the color leave IL's face. Eyes are huge and his mouth literally hanging open. He whispers, "Theres one" through broken breaths. I ease my head around. Nice buck (broke off 6, but that one side was outside his ear) came into stand in a big bottom. Stare down at 25 yards, slipping through trees, I'm trying to calm myself and a six year old down for a shot. The last chance is a hole at about 35 yards. That bastard stops with his head in the hole.

Infidel: "What do you see?"
Infidel Lite: "His head."
Infidel: "When he takes a step you have to shoot him."

Deers catching on to the conversation that taking place 35 yards to his right.

Deer steps into hole and I manage a "BAAAHH". That bastard freezes up and stands there like an animal cracker. Perfect.

Infidel: "Shoot him. shoot him. shoot."
I could see his gun barrel moving around. 30 secs later (seemed like 30 min) buck bolts up a ridge. No shot.

Ive always said it's not about killing, its about the hunt. Well, that's been reinforced. He was disappointed, but we both couldn't stop smiling. Gave him a big hug and some encouragement. Couple "That was awesome".

15 min later it's getting pretty dark.

Infidel: "you ready to go?"
Infidel Lite: "No, theres another deer"

I'll be damned another buck slipping through the woods. This one never gave us a chance, but we waited til it was dark as a sack of black cats and he still didn't want to leave. The kids hooked, man. Woke up this morning asking when were going to camp. Best feeling in the world watching this little dude get turned on to the world. Really learning how to hunt.

We have such a great hunting heritage here in the south and after hunting in other places and talking to people in the midwest and west Texas I feel that getting our young people out there and letting them fall in love with it is truly what separates us from everyone else.

As for me and Infidel Lite, I have a nice 10 on camera. I'm leaving my gun in the truck. Think I'd rather see him struggle to get a shot then shoot him myself!!

Puts a huge smile on my face reading your post.
He'll never forget that moment, even though no buck was taken. ;)

For the first few years my son hunted (started at 5), we put a bipod on his rifle and made ground blinds. All he had to do was pick up the back of the rifle. Takes a lot of wobble out of it.
First deer was six years old at 12 yards on the ground. He shot between the eyes. I said, "son, thats a good shot, but why'd you shoot him between the eyes?" Son replies, "Daddy, I looked in the scope and all I could see was his face."
Sounds like you have a great attitude. Enjoy these moments. They pass quickly. I've never heard anyone say that they wish they'd spent less time hunting with their kids.
Best of luck and keep us updated. Also, what part of the country are ya'll hunting in?

This is truth

We're Central La. Ruts in full swing. He'd been running does. Mouth open breathing hard. So glad he got to see that, although it's tough on a young man to get on em when they're doing that.

Great job! I’m more than a little bit jealous, both of my girls will never be hunters. Not for a lack of trying on my part, they’re just not interested. I’ve been blessed to give two nephews the opportunity to kill their first squirrels, rabbits, and deer, just not my own kids.

Awesome as I sit here with my 3 week old son sleeping on my chest, I can't wait for moments like the one you just had.

My uncle was MUCH more of a hunting influence on me then my dad was. My dad just worked a lot and wasn't into hunting as much when I was at that age. It's important that boys have positive father figures in their lives other then their dads. Good for you for stepping up!

FTR my best friends dad was also a huge positive influence on me. Always mind what you're doing, you're probably making an impression on the young men around you.
