Those bazooka arse magnum cartridges are considered to be less effective on humans than rounds like the .357mag :coco2:

bviously a 9mm will get the job done. If you can accurately shoot a larger caliber though, why not go with that?
I bought a 9mm cause I want to shoot it plenty. 9mm is best option for that. Plus I want my boys to shoot it in a few year and I don't think the 40 gives much more than a 9mm.
I also have a 357 and getting a 45 soon. I say get one of each.

You see that second line out of the .40 cartridges? The 135-gr Cor-Bon? Guess what I carry in my G23?
Bringing a pistol to a dangerous situation is already a compromise. Don't do so on your cartridge loading, too, and compound your disadvantage. The only caveat is - if you're a bad shot in general, or a noticeably better shot with 9x19 than the .40 (they are available in virtually every pistol platform of note), then go with more of the smaller round.
Otherwise, hit as early as you can, as hard as you can in the gunfight - that's always good advice.

I've seen the ballistics tests and they're really not favorable to the .40 especially when using good loads/self defense rounds for the 9. That, on top of the .40 being a snappier round thus not being able to get off follow up shots as well as the 9mm kind of slant me towards the 9.
Am I wrong here?
Ballistic tests don't mean jack, in the grand scheme of things - I waited to pass final judgment on the .40 until there was a large enough pool of people shot by .40s to compare to the better 9mm, .45acp and .357 magnum loadings. The old .357 magnum, Federal "B" loading (Federal 357B) is the industry's "gold standard", a ~95% 1-shot stopper - which means that 95% of the time, a person shot by a single round is out of the fight.
There were some good-to-great .45 ACP loadings over the years - they tend to be bulldozers, big, but ultimately slow. Makes a big hole and does cause sensory overload.
The .40 was developed, after the disastrous experience by the FBI in a shootout in Miami. 9mm fell into particular disfavor with that agency (again, based on real world shootings) and the .40 ultimately grew out of that.

Yea I've got a .45 but want to add a .357 and a 10mm as the next toys.
I relaize the 10mm ammo is expensive, but it's not something i'm going to shoot 300 rounds with at the range. Looks like a badass round to carry into the woods

This.
I have a full size .40 and a compact 9mm. I like them both for what they are intended to do. The 9 stays in the truck because it's smaller and easier to conceal and the 40 stays in the nightstand because it's harder to conceal. I also have a shotgun for hd so lets not start that debate.

After the pistol deer hunting thread I want one of these also.

I did too, but now I'm consolidating. I don't like .40 as much as 9mm or .45, so I'm consolidating to those. I'll probably even swap a .357 sig barrel in my 229 so that I really don't need to shoot .40 at all.

good lord that is biased.
would that situation really have turned out differently if a bunch of paper pushing agents with poor marksmanship had .40s against guys with rifles and shotguns?

I own a 9 and 2 .40s. It's not that I don't like my .40s, but for the cost of the ammo, the 9 is a much better deal. You've still got plenty of knockdown power with the 9. If you want to go full badass, get a .45. The recoil isn't that much worse than the .40 and you can punch massive holes in things.

Where did you buy your G19? I'm looking to get one soon.

Are you in BR? Most places are sold out and I was told their distributors were unable to get them atm.

Sure wish I had one. I need a good fun gun badly. Paying $22 for 50 rounds of ammo makes practicing not fun for poor people.

GA,
Using compararble self defense loads, the 9mm, 357 Mag, 357 Sig, 40 S&W and 45 ACP are all very similar in stopping a fight. Don't worry about whether a particular round is going to "knock down" the bad guy or not as that's NOT the purpose of a defensive handgun; you're asking the defensive handgun to STOP the fight.
9mm advantages:
less recoil/muzzle flip, even more pronouced in the smaller and lighter cc guns. This should also equate to faster recovery for follow up shots for most shooters.
increased mag capacity (usually 1-2 rounds)
less expensive range ammo.
My first cc gun was a Springfield Armory XD in 40 S&W. I very quickly found out I didn't like IWB cc w/ such a thick gun. Depending on the circumstances, I now cc a Kel-Tec PF9 or 45 ACP's (1911's or a Kahr CW45). I'm seriously considering replacing the XD 40 S&W w/ a 9mm. If I were you, I'd get the 9mm, shoot it a bunch and never regret the purchase.
