The best thing anyone can do with re-powering is pic the brand with the best mechanic in the area and pay for the extended warranty.

If you can change the oil on your car or truck then you can change the oil on a 4 stroke. Also the lower unit lube is something a newbie could do.

This is all I thought had to be done. Oil change and lower unit oil change. I can do all that stuff myself. It's even easier to do on a boat.

I've owned a boat since '93 and have never attempted it. Would not even know where to start.

They're great. Espically the Yamahas. Quiet as hell and great on gas

+1

Tried starting running engines when we first got them. Took a while to get use to them being so quiet.

Changing the fuel filter is easy also.

Gotta watch that, people do it on mine all the time so I try to catch them before. Guess after a while you could do some damage to the starter. This problem is really bad on pontoon boats where the motor is hidden away haha

It is the worst sound also. We never do it anymore and they actually seem loud now. I haven't been aboard a boat with a 2 stroke in over 10 years though

that and granny-shifting, ughhhh. In short, don't touch my boat controls. And if you do, do it right! Looks like when you factor in maintenance the 4-stroke becomes a bit cheaper to maintain (when you use it a lot, of course) assuming for a 2-stroke you'd be buying 2-cycle TCW3 left and right. I know i'm enjoying not having the urge to stock up on oil every time I walk into Academy anymore. 100 hours in between 4-stroke oil changes is quite a lot of running around. I could see those hours passing quicker for offshore guys who are trolling a lot though

The only 4 stroke I wouldnt recommend is Honda's 115. Its a great motor (same that comes in the civic is actually what I was told) but its heavy as hell. My dad is running it on his tri-toon and it makes it set high in the front. Its the same weight as the 150.

Merc is hyping their new 4-stroke 150, touting it as lighter than the competition, including Yamaha, with higher displacement at that. Note, it's not a Verado, just an inline 4 like the Yamaha. Not sure about other brands' configuration. We'll see what the jury says later on.

I believe the new mercs have a turbo on them. If I was buying now and went 4 I would def get a SHO though. Would look hard at the merc after its been out a year though.

Yamaha SHO's are incredible, but only 225hp and up. Maybe one day there'll be a 150 SHO but the popularity of the inline 4 150hp has just been crazy for Yamaha so doubt they'd be in a hurry to jeopardize that market.

yeah. My last trip to salt resulted in a wild goose chase for plugs. had to find Accord plugs for that one. cannot recall the size. Nothing close to Grand Isle had anything.

I think you pay more upfront and recover over time. I don't miss adding oil. The convenience of a 4 stroke is nice. I don't change the oil on my car but will on the outboards

Yeah, it appears salt water fisherman have no trouble paying more for something that is heavier, slower, requires maintenance, and only gets slightly better mileage. They sure are quiet though.

At the time they were thought to be much more fuel efficient but I think the weight offsets the efficiency a bit. I think the biggest savings has to be on oil. In the summer we run 100+ miles and only get 2-3 miles a gallon so if there is a difference it helps...especially with gas at $4 a gallon.
