I am looking into getting a yamaha 150hp 2 or 4 stroke and I can't decide. Anyone have any input on newer 4 strokes?

To give you some background, I had one of the first 4 strokes out around 1996 and had nothing but problems with it. It was a 90hp Honda. After that I got a 150hp yamaha vmax HPDI around 2001 and it was a great engine until I let it sit up and the injectors got ruined with bad fuel and sitting up too long without running (long story why it sat up so long but I basically started my own business and had no time off to run it). Repair place said I'm looking at $3,500-$6,000 in repairs and I really don't want to put that much money in a 11.5 year old engine. My boat is a 20 ft "custom flat" boat and I mainly fish/hunt out of Venice, La.

I have a 115 4 stroke Yamaha and my dad has a 150 4 stroke yamaha. Love them. If your boat can handle the added weight I can't really see a reason not to go with a 4 stroke

New ones are great but that price is outrageous if the motor was running when parked. Would get a couple other prices, at least one, and fix and sell.

Have twin 225 Yamaha four strokes on our Jupiter. It has never not cranked on the first try in 5 years.

I have a 05 yamaha four stroke 115 and a '10 evinrude 225 etec. They are both great engines. I can't decide which is better.

Im a huge fan of two strokes. I just like the mechanics of a two stroke so much more than a 4.

You will be hard pressed to find negative reviews of the newer 4 strokes. Yamaha is the most popular brand and is what I have but the Zukes and Mercs are also good.

From what I understand it is pretty common to put over a couple thousand hours on those Yammies with no problems at all. Just make sure you do the regular maintenance.

The fuel injected 2 strokes being produced now are also solid motors and can be had for a much cheaper price which is one of the main reasons you still sea a bunch of em.

I have the Yamaha 150 4 stroke and I love it.

Haven't had to add any oil.
Only have to change oil every 100 hours after initial break in oil.

Very quiet...one of my buddies keep re-starting it because he can't hear it running.

Good on gas mileage.

I have a 22' Xpress Bay series and it goes about 50mph loaded down.

I would have figured this.

It is easier to play home mechanic on a 2 stroke engine

I just like having no valvetrain and popping on every rotation. 2 strokes just make so much shite.

4 stroke all the way. If you go 4 stroke go yamaha or suzuki. If you do decide 2 stroke go 150 yamaha HPDI. This is based off of exp. I had an etec and the oil is high as a giraffs arse. HPDI which was a 200 was excellent. In 4 stroke I have ran Honda, Suzuki, and Yamaha. Zuke and Yamaha are awesome. The only popular 4 stroke I dont have exp with is the Mercury Verado but I can tell you the controls are expensive.

The Yamaha 4 stroke is a solid motor and would be my choice no doubt. Also get the extended warranty, but shop around, dealers have a wide margin on price and a little leg work can save you some $$$

If you have a good Etec mech in the area you might wanna consider it. The over the top harcore 4 stroke people will have you think that you burn so much oil that it is way more costs per yr as the 4 stroke 100 hr services.

I have a new 2011 250 that is either turned off, idiling at 1500 rpm or cruising at 5000 rpm. I have less than 90 hrs and have only burned just a hair less than 85 gallons of gas and 3 gallons of xd-100. This is on a 23 Grady White WA 2 adults, 1 child and full fishing load. Oh and there is no service for the 1st 300 hrs

Not knowing a whole lot about outboards, is there much of a difference in fuel consumption between a two and four stroke?

It's not huge, especially at low speeds. Gets great at WOT. may depend on size too, but I'm no expert.

I was told that once the injectors and high pressure fuel pumps get plugged up it gets expensive to fix the HPDI's (high pressure direct injection). Repair shop(Boat Stuff) said the high pressure fuel pump is sealed and there is no way to get inside to fix it and that it needs to be replaced. That pump alone is over $1,000 according to them. I can still trade the motor in but they don't want to give me much for it. I haven't decided what to do with it yet. I am still in the shopping around and deciding mode right now.
