Where is a good place to get some for protection? I mainly have target loads and with everything going on I want better ammo.

I am also looking for a holster for the 38. It is a S&W with a 3" barrel. I could not find a model number, but it a SS revolver that the BRPD sold years ago when they switched to 9mm.

luckygunner.com has pretty consistently had Speer Gold Dot and Federal HST in 9mm throughout this whole thing. They won't be the cheapest, but they'll have it. They, like everyone else, have had nearly nothing else in stock, but I've noticed that they've been able to keep at least one or two 9mm SD round offerings available.

If you want to find the cheapest, any of the web crawling engines will help you on your search for something in stock.

Online if you can find it.

No particular order and there are many others out there. Good luck on finding 9mm though.

Yeah, good luck w/ the ammo. Persistence and patience will be your friends. I'd add Midway USA to the list of web sites you follow. MW's prices are decent. Availability right now is spotty, just like everyone else's. A really good thing about MW is they frequently (usually at least once a month) offer free shipping for orders >$49. They just did this last week so it'll probably be a while before they do it again. MW's also good about sending out email notifications when a product is back in stock. But act fast when something's back in stock. I'd been looking for a gun powder that had been out of stock. Late one night last week i got an email notification that it was in stock. I waited till the next day to make the order as I had some friends I wanted to offer the chance to piggy back on the order. The powder was out of stock again when I made the order w/in 20 hours.

What's the purposed use for the handgun holster?

OK, here is a rookie question. What do I look for in grain, type of lead, etc.? This is for protection. I have plenty of target loads.

My 9MM has a holster that I can put on my belt. The 38 has nothing. Also the 38 is my wife's gun that she got when her Father passed away many years ago. Today was the first time she has ever shot it.

Generally if it says defense/protection on the box and is from a major manufacturer (federal, hornady, winchester, speer, remington, etc) you're good to go. This is one of those things that can get as deep or as shallow as youd like.

Eta: others will likely be by shortly to offer some very detailed opinions. Keep the above in mind and you'll be fine.

Federal HST in 9mm

Been looking to get some "bulk" 9mm and 45ACP HST, but several sites are apparently selling them only to law enforcement. Has anyone run into this and have a work around?

For the average civilian, it’s hard to go against this.

But personally I like Speer gold dot and federal HST since they are the most popular rounds for law enforcement.

Same, I use these two interchangeably. I also have a bunch of hydra-shok 357 sig which I wouldnt hesitate to carry. For some reason I prefer HST the most.

For revolvers I generally prefer old school SJHP from federal or remington. I think a little fragmentation can be a good thing.

ammunitiondepot.com currently has both Gold Dot and HST cases in 9mm for $800, but not .45ACP. You just have to keep checking until you find what you want and when you do, don't wait to buy.

What is Speer short barrel ammo? This is for the 38 special and a 3" barrel.

Just ammo that is optimized for performance in short barrels. I would consider 3" short for a revolver, 4" is generally considered standard.

The speer short barrel loads are good stuff. They should have less flash than full power loads and bullets designed to work well at the slightly lower velocities you get from a short barrel. Full power loads usually give lots of flash and bang from short barrels. For a 38spl that would be a good choice.

Speer gold dot bullets are universally considered to be one of the best available in any caliber for self defense.

If you ever have to defend yourself you want to be able to say that you use what law enforcement uses, not RIP death super death killerz bullets. Looks much better in court that you are a responsible gun owner and not a tacticool mercenary.

What I'd add...

There's a common perception that any HP is a premium defensive round, and that they all expand the same.

Per some tests I've seen online, that isn't true.

"Major manufacturer" can be misleading, as PMC (Starfire), Fiocchi, PPU, Geco etc are (normally) found on shelves too, and they put out HP rds. And I've got some Federal Classic Hi-Shok, what used to be considered a LE rd, that gets spotty with testing (might not expand if shot through several layers of clothing).

I remember a few years back the zombie-killer bullets, don't remember if they were just 22lr or if in other calibers. I wouldn't recommend those, just for the above reasoning.

I found a deal last month on Gold Dots, picked up some.

Right now you need to find "decent" self-defense ammo. When the panic dies down, you need to get some of the "really good" stuff.

For the 9mm:

1. If you can find Federal HST - it's pretty much the gold standard. It's one or two generations beyond the Hydra Shocks.

2. An "amost" equivalent to the HST is Winchester Ranger-T. It's a couple of generations beyond than the old Black Talons.

3. Speer Gold Dots give reliable expansion - they just don't typically expand to a diameter that's equal to the HST.

4. All the polymer-tipped ammo (Hornady Critical Defense, Corbon Powerball, et al) will expand reliably - but they just don't expand a whole lot compared to something like HST.

For the Revolver:
As was noted - the Speer Gold Dots for short barrels is considered to be about as good as you're gonna get.

Again - for right now - you may not have a lot of options.

The Speer short barrel 38 special are all I have been able to find. This is at Target Sports. They also have Speer 9MM. I will most likely order these today and they should be at my home address shortly after I get home from a trip in my RV.

Edit: They are ordered.

Looking at the Lucky Gunner tests LINK

the Magtech 115 Guardian Gold +P did great, IF you can find it. Looks to be one of the few imports that did what it should.
