.300 Savage Model 99 *OP Updated*

Anyone have experience shooting this rifle? Got one passed down to me by my grandfather, and this will be my first deer season hunting with it.
Really excited to get out there and do the same thing he did for decades with the same exact rifle. Probably going to have a bit of leakage from the eyes once I take the first one with it. Plan is to bring that experience here somehow. (Not the tears, but definitely at least pics of the deer.)
UPDATE: This is a Savage Model 99H. Manufactured in the 1930s is what a local gun expert told me. Looked up the serial number in a database. Everything on the rifle is original (sans stock cushion which my grandpa loved since this kicks like a mule).
My dad said my Poppy joked one time that “One thing is for damn sure: when you shoot the deer with that thing, you’ll both feel an equal impact!”
Full shots
Lever Safety
Brass Cartridge Counter - as you load the rotary mag, it indicates how many are inside. 4+1 capacity.
Stamped Barrel
Serial Number shot

Fun gun to shoot, and a head turner at the camp. I have a .308 that was given to me by an uncle when he quit hunting.
Rarely hunt with it any more.

Anything about the gun itself that makes you not care to hunt it anymore?
Also, I have been looking into it today and believe I may actually have a fairly old model. I'll be looking up the trigger guard stamp and serial number to figure out when it was made, etc. I know Poppy hunted that rifle for years, so I can't wait to learn the details about it.

Just too easy to grab the 35 Whelen or the .270, which are both composite stock and stainless, and sighted in. And the fact that it's in great shape...it's become a safe queen I'll pass down to one of my kids.

Makes sense. I’m torn on if I want to still shoot it and take care of it, or if I want to clean it up and make it a safe queen like you mentioned.

Shoot it.
Can find cool some old stories online about them. Was a really popular gun in its day.
300 savage was the basis for the 308
250 savage or 250-3000 (can’t remember which name was used first) was first commercial cartridge to hit 3000 FPS.
I want to put a peep site on mine. Don’t want to have it drilled/tapped for scope. Nothing about value (not worth a some ridiculous amount) - just like it staying more original

Very cool old rifle. According to the Blue Book of Gun Values, that serial number dates the firearm to 1926 year of manufacture. 1925 ended with ser. no. 280,000 and 1926 ended with 292,500.

Nice tidbit about the 3000 FPS mark, had no clue!
And Gibb, solid find. I didn’t know the first place to turn as far as looking up the serial number and getting accurate information. The only thing I knew for sure was it was earlier than a 1940 manufacture. I appreciate that!

Very cool gun. Looks like in good shape. Freshen it up and it'll be a good shooter.
ETA; by 'freshen' it, I mean just a good lube job and cleaning. Don't change anything; keep it original

Never crossed my mind to mod it! She’ll catch a cleaning and get sighted in/adjusted this weekend.
Truth be told, I’ve been in need of a hobby the has personal meaning to me... seems like I’ve found it.

Don’t get the idea of passing a safe queen to the kids. Just so it can sit in their safe?
If it’s being “retired”, hang it over the mantle, etc. Agree with others, shoot it. They’re a tool.
