So cleaning guns after a morning hunt (killed first deer with my son present) I took the time to assemble and upgrade the kids AR 7.62. while there I took out my dad's old single shot and took it apart and cleaned it.

Gun is around 65 years old. Looks good and kids want to shoot it. The question is the firing pin looks crooked. Not sure if this is just how it is with a rimfire cartridge or something is wrong. I'd love some input. Thanks

Update: Took the gun apart and cleaned. Sanded and stained the stock. Waiting to seal it. Cleaned barrel up. Date code puts it made in February in 1935!

Thought that was cool. The kids are pumped. Bought them a metal flip target. They are stoked.

Update 2. Finished refinishing the gun. Pictures in last post.

One picture is not enough to diagnose a problem. If youre really worried about it take it to a gunsmith or gun store at minimum. However if your only concern is the firing pin and its a .22 then just give it a shot. Its not gonna hurt you. at most it just wouldnt fire or you might not even be able to close the bolt completely

What brand and model? I don’t know the answer but maybe we can find a schematic that will show.

What make / model ? Remington 511 ? I can help you if I know the model. The bolt has a firing pin and an extractor. Load a round and go shoot it. If the firing pin spring is to weak it won’t ignite the primer compound

Remington 514.

I was going to take it out the next time I go just to give it a shot. I just like looking ahead. That KS everyone.

O and the OB bailed me out today. After reading the thread of loading a deer solo on a four wheeler... Standing on the rear rack and dragging up the fender suggestion was money. My 8 year old was struggling with the size of the cull buck.

The firing pin should be almost flush with the bolt face. It is beveled and shaped like a flat head screwdriver. The extractor is cut on an angle and pulls out the case by the rim. The small round button protruding from the center of bolt is the ejector. .... it looks like a Frankenstein wart.

Firing pin

Extractor

Bolt face (dirty, needs cleaning) ... honestly I think your bolt is fine as you got the extractor and firing pin mixed up. Do NOT lose the bolt as used bolts are fetching $200

Come on Blaze, clean that gun.

Was at my in laws a few weeks ago and shooting a couple of .22s. One was a Marlin and the other was a Browning Auto 22.

Neither would function.
I took them and completely took them down and cleaned them. The Auto 22 might be the dirtiest gun I’ve ever seen. There was crap just caked on it. I took my knife and scraped off what I could and got the rest pretty clean. Ran good after that.

Some thing is wrong with the Marlin. Has something to do with the magazine. Trigger won’t pull.

Amazing man. That's exactly what I'm looking at. Thanks so much. I cleaned all that up today with my brass tooth brushes

Pics are from the I-net ... I was a gunsmith and built custom rifles to put myself through college and graduate school. I enjoy helping people and providing info to fix their problems

Here’s an easy fix (video) to disassemble the bolt and make it shoot much better. I’m willing to bet that bolt has never been disassembled. Clean the spring, firing pin, and inside of bolt body with break cleaner... then spray down with a rust preventative lubricant such as CLP Break Free

Awesome. Will do.

Any recs on what I can put on the wood stock? It's in need of a refresh or sealer of some sort just to preserve it.

That video is awesome. And no it has never been disassembled. I have multiple CLP products that should do the job.

Thanks again. It'll be great to hand dad's first rifle to the kids to plink away.

Hahaha.

Yea going to tear down my dad's two Winchester super Xs autos.

They hung up a few times years ago. Looking last night there is a cap on the buffer that crumbles over time you can replace with an upgrade. I have his guns at my house since the hurricane until his house is completed.

Having a blast (pun intended) tearing all these apart and cleaning/repairing them. May have found me a hobby for when I'm old and kids are grown and gone.

Mans gotta do something.

I need an open sight .22 for general purpose blasting so this will be a worthwhile project for me. Just ordered a firing pin.

Your stock has a half century of character and patina. If wanting to clean off the grime, dirt, oil, fingerprints, etc... use some 0000 steel wool , mineral spirits, and rub in small circular motion. Clean a small area at a time. Mineral spirits won’t soak into the stock or take off any varnish or original finish. Use a paper towel to remove excess mineral spirits.

Congratulations! That 514 is one of the finest, most accurate and reliable single shot 22 rifles ever made. Years back I had to hunt the gun shops and shows to find enough of them for my sons and grandsons as well as for any daughter or granddaughter that wanted one of them because that was what they learned on. Single shot rifles so they didn't get into the spray and pray habit. Everybody liked my original one and wanted one like it. Perfect rifle for head shots on squirrels and rabbits and that was the rule around our house, don't want to ruin any meat.

I have one of those, with the long barrel. It looks like something that would have belonged to Jed Clampett, but man, that thing will keep a tight group at 100 yards, and will take any .22 ammo that you feed it. Have you never shot it? If you can find a firing pin, you should definitely get it operating.

Never shot it, its been broken my whole life. I ordered a firing pin for it, waiting for it to come in.
