There are, but that rule of thumb generally applies.

Yep, there sure are.

Regardless, get what you can, but go with 40 if you have a choice...better penetration.

So why the shortage on 22lr

Is DHS buying all that too?

Because people are plinking all the more with 22 now that everything else has shot up. That has driven the 22lr price up.

A year ago I paid $11 for a brick of 555.
A month ago I paid $35 for a brick of 500.
2 days ago that same $35 brick was selling for $89.

Getting freaking crazy. I wish I could reload 22 like I can everything else. May have to take out a second mortgage to keep me and my daughters plinking. They love going and shooting the M&P-15/22. They each have their own 22 youth rifle but want to shoot the M&P ... good taste I guess

At Bowie's last week, I bought 2 boxes of 22LR at 40 rounds per box. They put a limit on purchasing 2 boxes of 40 per week.

Depends on manufacturer.

Often the 36 grain ammo will have a slightly higher muzzle velocity than the 40 grain ammo. The 30 grain ammo will almost always be faster.

Right now, given the shortage of .22 ammo, it's hard to be picky -- but the accuracy of .22 LR firearms can vary a lot depending on ammo.

CCI makes a 40 grain solid point "Tactical" .22 LR load that is marketed toward AR15 style .22 LR's. It's slightly slower than the 40 grain soild point Mini Mag (1200 ft/sec vs 1235 ft/sec). The "Tactical" ammo is slightly more accurate in my 15-22 than the Mini Mags.

The least accurate (in my 15-22) is the 36 grain hp Federal .22 LR "Value Pack" that Wal-Mart sells. But it's still MOS accurate (minute-of-squirrel).

The CCI Mini Mag ammo is the most reliable I've found (fewest failures to fire), especially in handguns.
