20ga choke question for Goose/Crane hunt
Posted by PT24-7 on 1/2/22 at 2:50 pm00
We had someone back out so I’m bringing my son on our goose/crane hunt this week.
I have a 20 ga benelli I’m letting my son use. All I have is factory chokes and one turkey choke. The full choke I have says “no steel shot” and the turkey choke I have doesn’t say anything but primos.
Should I use the steel shot okay modified choke or one of the others mentioned? Not sure

Try to find some bismuth or tungsten it will hit harder than the steel. If not shoot the modified choke it will probably pattern better than the full with that steel anyways.
Bismuth is softer than steel so safe for full choke tubes but non toxic for waterfowl

Not sure which benelli it is but I used one for the first time this season and used the longer IC that came with it, but on one of the hunts I think the longer Modified would have done better. I wouldn't shoot steel through the benelli full.

I don't doubt you can kill geese with a 20, esp with the right choke and in 3.5" but a 12 gauge shell holds more of everything, not just pellets.

More pellets, more than likely you’d have a bigger pellet available for 12 gauge… due to shell shortage, better quality shell with a higher velocity also.
But I get what you’re saying, just not the best option. You can kill ducks with a 410, but you don’t see anyone shooting them.

Yes.
The modified will likely pattern best with steel anyway. Shoot em in the head.
My brother doesn't even own a 12 ga and he smacks ducks and geese with the best of them with his 20.
