2022 Tarpon Rodeo
Posted by SmokinBurger on 8/1/22 at 8:59 pm11
Anyone else notice a huge decline in attendance? I understand Ida had an impact, but i think some of the prizes and winnings should be changed to attract more participants.

The faux pas rodeo in Venice is always the same weekend as tarpon and pulls some of the boats from the tarpon rodeo.

Correct, Faux Pas rodeo offers cash prizes whereas the Tarpon gives out plastic plaques for the winners.

Tickets were very hard to buy off the island.
Also the marina shut down the launch at lunch time and you had to pick up else where. They also had a cover charge to get into the marina.
The marina and pavilion are now two completely separate events, not like prior years.
Also the rodeo has been on a decline since everyone has to post everything to facebook.

40% of the camps are gone. Think that had anything to do with it?

It absolutely does have an impact. I have also noticed a large decline in attendance within the past ~5 years or so.

It's just the changing of the times and the island in general. The island is no longer a guys only fishing destination and a place for the youngins to do underage drinking. It's much more family oriented now. Blue boot is taking over as the island rodeo to attend. Yes there are very limited places to book to stay, but the entire month of July the island has been packed. Granted nothing like the old tarpon days with bumper to bumper traffic taking 45min to get to end of island. It used to be like Panama city on spring brake. Lol. shite like that's never gonna happen anymore. Can't get away with it with social media.

Yeah I remember 10-15 years ago the Tarpon Rodeo being a huge event in south La. I was surprised to see no mention of it in here last week and no chatter about it among any of my friends

As has been stated, it will never be the same. It was like a mini Mardi Gras in July. People came from all over to have a good time and see the big fish being brought in. One huge mistake they made was to get rid of the spearfishing division. Was fortunate to have experienced it through the 70's,80"s and 90's.

And that is what is meant about "the good old days". I feel sorry for the youngsters today.

I just came to say I'm disappointed this isn't NSFW yet

If cell phone cameras, or even digital cameras were readily available in the late 80s and early 90s......Holy crap!

it's been spiraling downhill since the 80s oil bust.
cell phones and social media finishing blow.

Nope. I’d say it peaked mid 90’s. I remember being packed like sardines in the beach club. The last 5 + years Memorial Day and 4th have had great crowds. I do think they need to do something to get some crowds back.

Maybe the novelty of the TR has worn off. The crowds, the behavior have worn out their welcome?
Nothing lasts forever.

Maybe the whores and lewd behavior finally got to be too much for the majority of attendees and they had enough? Mardi Gras got old too for a lot of people.
