2016 Born Longhorn Heifers

The cattle question thread got thinking about my cows, so I figured I'd show y'all what we kept this past October when we worked our herd.
Our bull TCC Candy Gumdrops has given us 6 longhorn calves this year. 4 bulls and 2 heifers.
Here's the two heifers we are weaning and keeping around to see how they develop.
Murica Monk (A guy with the last name Monk said, "The white on her head looks like North America")
Gumdrop Gal (Sire: TCC Candy Gumdrops, Dam: SH Galaxy Gal)
So that's how we name them, it's either something funny someone says or observes, or a combination of the parents names.
As to grading them. Murica monk has better horn, color, and fullness of hip, but she is also about 4 months older. I really like how both of them got the asymmetrical painted face from their sire TCC Candy Gumdrops. Before I bought him, I noticed he tends to throw that trait on a majority of his offspring. For reference, this is the dam of Murica Monk.
And this is the sire to both and dam to Gumdrop Gal in the background.

Thanks, it's a work in progress. You have to have a plan to stay interested, otherwise, they just become cows out in a pasture you have to feed and worry about.
Doing longhorns, I've tried to acquire a better bull each time we get a new one. The upgrade shows as heifers we are keeping are better than most of our older cows we started with. Keep culling and replacing and the overall look and value of the herd will show your work.

Nice. From the looks of the dams (color wise), the calves should be reversed.
Fine looking cattle

That's one of the neat things about longhorns. There is no guarantee on what color you'll get. It's the only breed without a uniform coat color.

Nice looking heifers really like the splash of color and horn set on murica. I hate to say it (cause I love butt headed cows) but watching my son raise longhorns has been extremely gratifying. Lots of support from really great people. So where you headed bull wise from here?

Nice herd! I always thought that bull on your avi was photoshopped.

He's going to be brindle, that much I know. A Cowboy Tuff Chex or JP Rio Grande son would be nice. Regardless, I want at least a 5 year old bull. No more herd sire prospects for me. That's a gamble with terrible odds.
For instance. One of the biggest breeders has over 1000 calves a year. Let's assume half are bulls. Of those 500, half get banded in the first week. At weaning half get cut again leaving 125. At 1 year that gets cut down to top dozen. He keeps the best 1 or 2 and sells the remaining 10 or so as breeders. So a bull has about a %1 chance of being worth a shite and that's a serious operation. Your odds of buying a prospect that turns out are slim.
I think your money is better spent paying a little more and buying a proven breeder.

If you were out on the open range in 1885 for months on end with only a sack of flour and rice, they'd be damned good.
Otherwise, they're value is in hide, horn/skull, rodeo, or just pasture ornaments.

I said a Cowboy Tuff Chex Son.
Here's a 3.5 year old... He just hit the market.
quote:
DOB: 6/1/2013 SIRE: Cowboy Tuff Chex DAM: BL Rio Tinker 817 MEASURED: 71 ½" T2T - 10/30/2016 COMMENTS: Take a hard look at this son of Cowboy Tuff Chex. Great conformation, color & size to go along with the pedigree. His dam is the big horn Bob Loomis cow BL Rio Tinker. He is a strong breeder of the beautiful brindle color. Measuring 71 ½" at 41 months. His calves are correct & clean. This is a great opportunity for someone to obtain sought after genetics. The new owner will have full possession the first year. The sellers would like to retain the "option" to breed to him again after the first year. He is just a little over 3 years old! PRICE: $3,500 - half interest with full possession
Not a bad deal until you get to the half interest part.
