At that level, it's an investment - it will probably appreciate.

Even then, I can't justify it.

My insurance increased $57 a year, and the MSRP was only $2,300 more then my similarly equipped 2010. Costs of the 2015 aren't as big as people are stating.

Similarly equipped or identically equipped? MSRP or out the door price?

True, but it just seems like the MSRP on these things is through the roof. $65k+ for a loaded half ton truck is nuts.

i call bs on this...the price difference from 13 to 14 was that...trucks are increasing in price no matter what trim level or features..

My loaded KR MSRP was 53,700 in 2013

A loaded KR in 2015 has about a 64 or 65 MSRP

Ford hiked up prices in 2014 so they could lessen the blow to the 2015 imo

They tried to mask it by somewhat splitting the difference

That's one reason, but they also had limited production in 2014 so they could retool the factory for 2015s...so there were fewer 2014 trucks on the market = higher 2014 prices. Then new 2015 made of aluminum = even higher lol

There are a bunch of car makes that already have aluminum bodies or panels. F150s have had an aluminum hood at least 10+ years.

Vehicles with aluminum bodies:

Acura NSX
Aston Martin Vanquish
Audi A8L
BMW Z8 Alpina
Ferrari 360 Modena
Ferrari Enzo
Jaguar XJ
Honda Insight
Panoz Roadster

Vehicles with aluminum panels:

Buick LeSabre, Park Avenue: Hood.
Buick Rendezvous: Liftgate.
Cadillac CTS, DeVille, Seville: Hood.
Cadillac Escalade: Liftgate.
Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe: Liftgate.
Chevrolet Venture: Hood.
Chrysler Concorde: Hood.
Chrysler LHS: Hood.
Ford Expedition: Hood, liftgate.
Ford Explorer: Hood, fenders.
Ford F-150: Hood.
Ford Ranger: Hood.
GMC Yukon, Yukon XL: Liftgate.
Land Rover, Discovery and Discovery Series II: Hood, fenders, rear door.
Land Rover, Range Rover: Hood, doors, front fenders.
Lincoln LS: Hood, fenders, trunk lid.
Lincoln Navigator: Hood, liftgate.
Lincoln Town Car: Hood.
Nissan Altima: Hood, trunk lid.
Oldsmobile Aurora: Hood, trunk lid.
Oldsmobile Silhouette: Hood.
Plymouth Prowler: Hood, doors, trunk lid.
Pontiac Bonneville, Montana: Hood.

Do you have any idea how much it costs to repair any of those? You'd be shocked to learn: a shite load.

The Enzo was made from carbon fiber fwiw.

Ford bought aluminum plantls) to help with cost control if needed. I think they know what they are doing, regarding their most profitable vehicle the rest of industry will follow soon.

Cosign -- I'm looking at new Fords and Tundras right now, and might jump on an unused 2014 Ford given the '15 redesign. There are several local dealers trying to unload 2014 inventory, and I've seen 2014 King Ranches with only test drive miles listed as low as $41k.

Unused 2014 for $40k >>>>>> 2015 for over $55k.

Yeah I know. But just bc aluminum panels have been used for 10+ years on some cars doesn't mean it's any cheaper. Those panels are still pricier to replace and fix vs. their steel counterparts. My truck has an aluminum hood, fwiw.

I don't doubt that they know what they are doing. I just wonder why they decided to switch. Unless they have a hybrid or super efficient engine in the works, it's not netting the F150 much better gas mileage. It's reportedly stronger and lighter, so that's good for payload. It's more nimble and a little quicker

Only GM has said they will follow suit soon. I don't believe Toyota, Nissan or Ram have said anything.

A couple mpg's on their best selling line of vehicles does a lot to sway their fleet average which is what the government will grade them on

They sell so many trucks it probably hurts them

700lbs lighter equal more mpg and a higher bed capacity. Not to mention, the old 150s were maxed out at 11,300. Now they are just a hair under 12klbs.

I understand that you will retort that the new 150s dont get better MPG, but they do. Same exact truck, 700lbs lighter, will get better MPG.

Welding aluminum is nothing new.

A unit body car made of AL would be a bigger deal as pulling/straightening can result in fatigue problems in aluminum (more than steel).

On a vehicle with a body on frame not sure it is such a big deal.

Part for part, yes the comparable aluminum parts will cost more than steel.

700lbs lighter that's why they did it...700lbs is 700lbs/

Allows to make stronger frame also

Eta: aluminum panels are going to lower labor costs on repair end. Less man hours
