2001 Land Rover Discovery - Is it reliable?

My neighbor just bought one? His plans are to sell it, and looks pretty cool. I told him I’d trade my ‘99 Z71 for it. But I’m not so sure about the reliability and the maintenance work that goes into one. It’s all stock.
Here’s a pic of the model...

I’ve never had one nor knew anyone that has had one.
I guess there’s a reason they’re going for $1500 on Facebook.

I'd rock the hell out of that mid 80's Sl class in the background though.

It's really not a bad truck, but it's one of those vehicles that you really need to be enthusiastic about to own one. It will for sure need head gaskets, if not now then in the future.
Without good service history it's a hard pass. If you have to ask if a 17 year old disco is reliable, then you shouldn't own one.

Don’t be a bitch...buy a Defender 90

That vehicle has one reliable part in it.
The transfer case.
That tcase can handle 800hp all damned day. No one knows why they did it

JMHO, but if it's a simple straight up trade I would do it, considering it was in the same relative shape of the one in the OP pic. If it's not a daily driver you don't have much to lose. Can retail to someone else if needed or trade for something else of value. Again, JMHO.

For a daily driver, no way. It will strand you somewhere. My buddy and I got stranded once on I-49 in the middle of night on the way to a hunt. Damn thing started shaking, then it lost power, and that was it. We were stuck.
He had taken good care of it but had several other problems. I forget what the particular issue was that night but he traded out of the damn thing as soon as he could.

This. For all the crap us Jeep owners get, multiply that times 50 on Disco's.

Second on what was said about being a DD. If it's not a DD and you are mechanically inclined, I'd go for it. I wanted one bad, but couldn't justify it for a DD. I got a 4x4 4runner instead for reliability, but there is something about Landrover D2's that draws me to them.

The one hypothetical that I would take the Chevy over the second choice

Great looking vehicles and interior is well done.... Might be the most unreliable vehicle made since the late 90s.
I wish they would sell the body and interior with Toyota, Suzuki, Isuzu engine and drive train.

The engine is underpowered, and primitive, but it’s reliable.
I don’t love the interior, the Disco II is much better laid out, but it’s not the worst.
Gas mileage is poor. On a beaten engine, you might see 13 or 14 on the highway. I’ve seen 17 on a rebuilt motor though.
Rust is a problem, but it’s not as bad as with the late model classics.
Is it reliable? There are worse trucks. You’ll spend more money than you like on it though.
edit - I'm being thick, that is a Disco II.
The engine has problems with block porosity, and dropping liners. The engine management system also runs hot, which exacerbates the issue. This is worse on the later trucks.
They did a great job on the interior.
I can't remember if it effects the early trucks, but Rover trimmed the chassis down to save weight. Both this change, and the high running temps were intended to help with emissions. On some of these trucks, the rear quarter of the chassis will rust through.
I would own a Disco II if it had a rebuilt, top hatted, motor, and a galvanized chassis.
I would otherwise avoid them.
