I've never bought or owned a semi auto. Kinda want a 20 for my boy who I like to refer to as, The Great Indoorsman. It will not be used much. Franchi? Give me some ideas.

Franchi?

That what I bought for my kid 2 years ago. Great gun. Light weight, doesn’t kick too bad and cycles any shell we put in it. For $750 I don’t think you can beat it

If you feel he may not use it to much, check the pawn shops. I have friends with 12ga Franchi’s that seem to like them.

remington semi was good and cheap for my son.... and we put it through the ringer.

the franchi is a solid choice.

bad thing about a used gun - you have no clue what it's been through...

I would love to find one though. I have an old Marlin 30/30 I could trade since I cannot imagine that gun ever being used again.

Check with Simmons in Bastrop. They had a used Franchi sitting out a week or two ago. I’m not sure if it was 20 or 12. I’m out of town or I would run by there...

Franchi builds some nice 20s for under $1k. If you think it will be a once a year use and you want to stay real cheap go scoop a TriStar 20 gauge from Academy for less than $500.

If you want to buy 1 gun and be done forever, Go buy the Beretta Outlander a300(12 gauge), decent quality gun and it has a great adjustable setup that he can grow with from teen to adult. It is a 12 gauge but the gas operation system makes recoil a non-factor, especially with 2.75" shells. I believe the length of pull on the outlander starts at 13" and goes to 14.5" which is great for women and teens.

Mossberg youth pump or, if he is a big kid, full size Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 pump.

Buy him the Benelli Montefeltro.

I want one so bad for the boys. But I will keep it after they move up.l to 12s.

This might end up being my plan. Think Andrew has one in stock?

Probably.

I just think as I get older I’m going to want it. I’ll send them away w a .22, a 12, and a mid size rifle. The rest will be on them

Franchi currently sells inertia operated semi-autos. I haven't shot one, but they are generally reported to be good shotguns.

Franchi used to make gas operated semi-autos. A co-worker has one in 20 gauge (Franchi Model 620) and it has done exceptionally well shooting clay targets - has never jammed, even with the cheapest Walmart shells, and has very low recoil.

Franchi quit making the gas-operated models after Beretta acquired Franchi. Media reports at the time said they dropped the gas-operated guns because they were competing with (and overlapped with) Beretta's models. The inertia-operated Franchi guns are presumably modeled after the Benelli guns (since Beretta owns Benelli and Franchi).

You can find the Model 620 on GunBroker periodically (maybe 4-5 times a year). I don't recall what they typically sell for, but I don't recall seeing any prices that struck me as exorbitant. If you decide to watch for one on GunBroker you'll want to enter it as a "watchlist" item - you'll get an email every time someone lists a Model 620 for sale.

Find a model that fits him properly, which can be tricky at his age.

Fit is the most important thing with a shotgun. You could get one of the recommended ones here and if the fit is bad he won’t shoot well and will get discouraged.
