There were 15 last year total and in multiple counties. There were some just across the border in Tennessee too.

NASHVILLE, TN (AP) - The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency says 148 deer have tested positive for chronic wasting disease so far this season. Citing an agency statement, news outlets report the deer infected with the deadly disease were identified during a test of 8,700 deer. Infected deer were found in Tipton, Shelby, Fayette, Hardeman and Madison counties. The statement says the agency began testing during the 2018-19 hunting season when 185 deer were found to be infected with the contagious neurological disease. The state Fish and Wildlife Commission has approved a $1 million for an incinerator to dispose of the infected carcasses.

That's close to where the huge number were found in TN last year. I hunt in the zone where the original was found in MS, but it was the only positive result from all tested near there.

MDWFP - CWD

There are 21 confirmed in MS since Feb 2018. It looks like at least 10 more have tested positive but not confirmed.

MS CWD Annual Report

For perspective, over 23,000 samples taken.

Thanks for that link. I'm prolly gonna shoot one next week, but i'm definitely gonna drop it off at the game warden. I know they are supposedly safe to eat, but I aint taking no chances until I get confirmation they don't have CWD.

All of these efforts to contain seem kind of depressing. They are not working anywhere. Are we just gonna kill all the deer off?

I do think this is a problem. I just don't know what solutions we have.

I really wonder if this is something recent or if it’s been going on all along and just wasn’t recognized.

they say to stop feeding them unless you are using something that spreads out the feed and to stop putting out salt licks. I don't think that will help much, but theory makes a little sense. Deers still gonna procreate and lick on each other which is essentially the same as eating from the same trough or mineral lick

CWD has been out west and was recognized there first 50+ years ago. It has just recently crossed the Mississippi River.

CWD is in Mississippi. the number of confirmations is no longer relevant. Percent infected is now most important along with where infections are found.

Best case / wishful thinking is that it is rare and has been around for centuries. Or that environmental factors will somehow prevent it from ever becoming more common.

I hunt a spot in Tate County about 2 miles from the Marshall County Line, mainly turkey hunt there though. I knew there were some cases in NW MS last year, I was hoping it wasn't East MS near the Bama line where my land is

Good friend has a place in Lafayette that I get to hunt and I grew up in Alcorn County and have places there to hunt.

I think you just need to be careful about cleaning the deer.

There is no way I'd take a deer to be processed right now though.

It will be there soon. It is like containing smoke in the smoking area of a restaurant.

I worry about this shite spreading further south.

My brothers and I have a large track of property in Tensas along the river and 1 of the 2 biologist that came this past spring was predicting we’d have it there before 2025 which is very broad and a safe assumption but the other said he believes it won’t be as bad as people are thinking and cases will decline by 2021.

We’ll see what happens. I will say I’m all for outlawing feeding (downvote away). Up there in Tensas we have no need to feed and never have. I bought a little over 300 acres last year in SELA that literally borders SWMS. Everyone around in that area feeds. These folks wouldn’t know how to deer hunt without a 100# pile of corn or rice bran.

I was driving back home from camp in Port Gibson the other day to Oxford, and noticed that damn near every deer that was on the side of the interstate had its head cut off. First few I saw I was pissed thinking someone had just shot and took the head for horns, but after seeing quite a few I figured the wardens must be riding around and doing it to test.

I can’t believe that the wardens would leave a beheaded deer on the side of the road
