DUTCHTOWN — Two young children died Tuesday afternoon after an SUV slammed into them and three adults on a family fishing outing at a roadside bayou — despite the best efforts of doctors, nurses and others who stopped to help.

David Lanus Jr., 6, and his 9-year-old sister, Faria Lanus, of Geismar, died along the western bank of the bayou that runs along Bluff Road, and their father, David Lanus Sr., 30, and two family friends suffered moderate injuries, said Trooper First Class Jared Sandifer, a State Police spokesman.

At 3:25 p.m., a 2004 Nissan Armada driven by Shawnette B. Taylor, 47, of Prairieville, ran off the side of Bluff Road, onto the steep embankment and continued about 100 to 200 feet, striking the party, Sandifer said. Troopers do not know what caused Taylor to run off the road.

Firefighters from the Ascension Fire District No. 3 said when they arrived, an emergency room doctor, a paramedic, a dentist and a cardiac nurse were working together to do what they could in the chaotic situation.

Is it really fair to accuse that with no evidence of it?

It was raining in the area yesterday afternoon and it's very possible that it was completely an accident

not passing judgment bc I don't know that area, but my kids are not fishing within 10 yds of a 55mph highway.

Damn, that's terrible. As a father, when I hear stories like this it really gets me. Couldn't imagine if anything like that were to happen to my son. I'd be a mess.

True... when I worked in Thibodaux I'd drive down Hwy 20, always wondered how many people ran off the road there. Just a bad idea

from the WAFB facebook page

It was my dear friend who pulled these children out of the water. I was just with him last night. He and the woman driving the suv worked HARD to save those children. Him being a paramedic of 25+ years, and her being a nurse did EVERYTHING they could to save them. Also, an ER Dr., and a highly trained dentist were on scene before first responders arrived. My friend witnessed the ACCIDENT, and told the troopers on scene the woman did NOTHING wrong. There was NOTHING she could do to prevent this tragedy. Everything that could be done, was done! It had JUST began to rain, and she hydro planed in a very sharp curve. She was not intoxicated, nor had she been texting, according to my friend whom was directly behind her. Her ONLY reaction was to save those babies. My prayers go out to EVERYONE involved.

I saw it. Didn't want to get involved then, don't really want to get involved now.

Feel absolutely terrible for all parties.
