You need to know how to swim before owning any boa. iMO.
Can't believe folks still go into water with out knowing this simple thing unless they are handicapped wher they can't move.
Remember years ago where like six family members drowned in the Red River almost one at a time because they could freekin swim.

Learn how to backup your boat before you go out.
Learn how to tie the boat to dock, learn where your trailer needs to be in the water to load and launch your boat.
2 Examples
My ranger boat to load right I look at making sure I barely see the front of wheel well on the trailer. My boat floats on fine without having to use a lot of engine power.
In spillway when Grand River flowing turn the trailer slightly against the current so you can drive the boat slowly into the trailer while maintaining control.
Loading a boat with a trailer parallel to a current is a pain.
You can avoid damaging your trailer also and come
in easy on the trailer.
Never ever have someone between the boat trailer and vehicle when loading up. If the boat is off you can accidently hit them.
Always prep your boat to launch and load your boat the same way to not forget to put the plug in the boat and take the plug out on the way home.
If it rains going home with a plug in it you can have a lot of water build up and break an axle. Happened to my friend.
Then launching a boat common sense you need the plug in there.

If you spend enough time on a boat you will end up going in the water at some point. Whether you fall out, get thrown out, or your boat sinks, it will happen. So be prepared to swim.

PLEASE practice backing a trailer up BEFORE you get to the launch. Don't be the guy that learns while there are 40 boats waiting to get in.

I’m about to be a first time boat owner and I will go to different launches during the week on off times to practice. I can back up a trailer but I want to know where to stop in the water with my boat and everything so I’m not that guy.

This is good info, but also do you know how to drive it? I can't believe how many boats I see running with way to much trim, throwing long rooster tails and the engine over revving .
Was also going to ask if the person or place you bought it gave you a demo ride or instructions?

I agree when I bought my first boat the guy took me out in it to show me how to launch, load, bring boat to dock, idle (not throw 5 ft wakes),proper trim to get on plane, and when to tell when boat trimmed at right speed.

I am actually fairly shocked at the number of people that legit cannot swim. I saw it while stationed in the Caribbean. There are a significant number of folks that cannot swim, or can just barely tread water, across all spectrums of US families. I firmly believe that not just learning to swim, but be very comfortable in the water and a strong swimmer is one of the best skills a parent can cheaply obtain for their kid, and one of the only ones that could seriously save their life at some point.

Lots of good info here. On backing up, learn to use your mirrors. If you use the over the shoulder look method, you'll lose sight of your boat and will cause trouble. Mirrors are your friend.
Also on backing up, take your truck/trailer to an abandoned parking lot and just practice. Or a rarely used boat ramp at an off hour just to get practice while not impeding others.
Also when you do launch/pick up, find a spot out of the way to prep your boat and the same after to pull the plugs/strap down. That's not something you do on the ramp.
The main thing is to be considerate of others on and off the water. Do unto others and such.
And most of all, HAVE FUN!

Wear your life jacket while walking from your truck to the boat.

I can’t swim and I go 100+mi offshore regularly. If that’s the way the good lord wants me to go, I won’t fight it.
