Last Thursday morning the wife and I woke up and decided to run the beach in front of Shell Island looking for Tarpon. We ran to the last set of channel markers out of PCB inlet and bait was everywhere we looked. There was a current line with foam running east to west loaded with bait as far as I could see in both directions. We decided to drop back a live finger mullet to see what might be hanging under the bait. We bump trolled about 300 yards easy of the red channel marker and got bit, I reeled it tight and a sailfish exploded out of the water about 100 yards behind the boat. When I saw what it was I started screaming at her to get my phone. My wife has fished with me less than 5 times in 20 years and could not render much assistance. I finally got it close to the boat but as I reached out to grab the bill with one hand while pulling the rod with the other the hook pulled 3 feet from the boat. It was probably best anyway as I didn't have on any gloves and the boat was in neutral. It was my first billfish and I was able to experience it with my wife as well as doing it on our own. It truly made the trip worthwhile. On a side note I saw 11 tarpon in the few hours I was able to fish them but never had a ral shot a getting one to eat. My wife thought she videoed the whole fight but never started the video. I do have a short GIF of it boatside I could email to someone if they would like to post it for me.

Dang that is close in. Judging by the height of the building on the horizon that's about as far out as some of the diving wreck locations. Not far out at all.
Super Cool.

Awesome experience, one you'll never forget! When I was in Destin for the fourth I saw about 30 tarpon one day while paddle boarding. I've never kicked my self in the arse so much for not having a rod and reel setup for them. Tarpon were running thick.

That’s awesome. I’ve seen a few the past few years while fishing between there and Destin. Having a custom casting/sight fishing platform being built for tarpon fishing now.

This^^^^
I had no way to get any higher than my front deck and I was on top of the fish before I saw them. They spook easy and once they see you it's too late. I only got to cast to one pair of fish and the jerkbait landed on their head and they shagged arse as soon as it landed
I wish I would have had more time to fish but it was a family vacation not a fishing trip.

Saragossa 8K on a 6'9 xh Terez rod spooled with 50lb JB line one and 50lb Flouro leader

Another side note: When I reached out to grab the bill with one hand while pulling the rod with the other the hook popped out like a sligshot and stuck in my wife's face just millimeters away from her eye. I saw it and freaked the frick out as it looked like it was in her eye. Luckily it was just hanging by the barb and not actually stuck in her face. It hit her so hard she had a perfect circle hook bruise around her eye the next morning. That episode scared me so bad it kinda took away from what just happened, but we both sat down and had a cold adult beverage after that, it wasn't quite 9 a.m. yet

My wife said let's put another bait out and try it again. I kindly told we would do just that but it was very likely we would never see that again.
