Will USA Men's Hockey be competitive w/o NHLers?
Hoping to see a repeat of Lake Placid.

But without the Russians.

frick no they won't be. BUT all of the other countries are in the same boat. Canada will probably still be really tough just based on their depth. I think you'll see Sweden and Finland be tougher than usual.

I feel bad for the South Korean team though, they finished 23rd in qualification points

I haven’t looked at their roster yet but I think they have some NHL castoffs on the squad. James Wisniewski for example. Used to be a solid defenseman but injured his ACL and it eventually pushed him out of the league.

Is the KHL sending their guys? If so, that will still be a strong team for the Russians.

Yes KHL players are playing. So the Russian team is all KHL players, the Canadian and Swedish teams are like half KHL.

Yes. All of Russia's big KHL guns are there.

Kovalchuk, Datsyuk, Mozyakin, Kaprizov, Gusev, Shipachyov etc.

That's what is so silly. Pros are still in the Olympics, it's just that we're sending terrible pros.

And the US was gonna win the gold this time. We were stacked.

Bettman sucks. After the 2014 games where some people got hurt and there was backlash I knew they wouldn't let them play in 2018. I would think whatever potential losses the NHL sees from this they would cover on the back end by letting the best players in the world compete and generate more interest. The 2010 games is honestly where my love hockey really grew - it's a shame that this will not be a marquee tournament.

Olympic hockey is by far the best team sport, both summer and winter. This decision will get reversed no doubt once GB is gone.

I have no problem with the NHLers not being there. If it's not going to be the big guns they should have made a strict amateur rule and all the countries send their national U20 teams. Would have been entertaining as heck and we could have seen the future stars on the big stage. A nice throwback to the old days when it was strictly amateur and we were sending college kids. People loved it back then.

USA would have undoubtedly won gold this had NHL allowed players to go...

Their is an article I need to find and link that goes into more detail but it’s very disappointing that the US best roster in years would have been competing. Eichel, Gaudreu, and Matthews as a line would have wrecked shite.

Russians and Swedish will likely win gold/silver with Canada and US fighting for bronze

Olympic soccer suffers from this. They send U23 teams...but they began allowing teams to send 3 older players...it’s just not the same

Some of the best hockey are the international Juniors tournaments. I agree with this sentiment. Plus, we compete with Canada at the youth levels. Not sure how though lol

re: Will USA Men's Hockey be competitive w/o NHLers?
With my kids involved in youth hockey I follow USA Hockey a lot. The USA has really stepped up their game on the ice at the international level. I even heard Don Cherry concede on one of his radio spots the other day that the US was taking over the game. We're putting more and more players into the NHL and the feeling is that it's just a matter of time before US born players become the majority in the NHL.

It would have been great to see this Team USA this Olympics but the team will be even stronger the next cycle around and will only get stronger from here on out.

Umm no no they wouldn’t have. Canada would have and they would’ve made it look easy.

But in last few Juniors worlds USA has been great. I like this rule. I’d wished they did it in all team sports.
The US team that won baseball in Sydney was composed like this.

ETA the Canadians would at anytime could go McDavid Crosby Stamkos. Oh if they needed too they would have added Seguin Marchand and Schen to play against the top Americans and on D they would gone Pernell Weber Burns in any combo in back to stop USA top line

They also had Daughty and Giroux to throw around along with the best bench coach alive in Babcock
The goalie would’ve been either Holtby or Smith most likely.

Canada is disgustingly talented in the Senior teams and it’s not even fair at times
