The male-dominant Middle East countries are again no shows for the Olympics
Where are the mighty men of Middle East countries in the world's Olympic games?

Do they not swim, run, throw, jump, play volleyball, etc?

Culture gap?

What gives? The world is more round than the participation in the Olympics games.

Dude from Qatar is favored to win gold in the high jump. There are some distance runners. Iran is well regarded in wrestling and weightlifting .

The Refugee Olympic Team is dominated by Middle Easterners, that should tell you something.

Egypt has the largest team at a little over 100 which is 1/6 the size of the US. They have won two bronze medals so far.

The top teams have typically always been rich western countries or Communist behemoths.

Does anyone claim that there are mighty men in the Middle East?

On the right is LSU wrestling star Joe Atiyeh who won the silver for Syria in the heavyweight freestyle.

Lost to Lou Banach of the US another phenomenal wrestler.

Those countries usually have great wrestling and weightlifting teams. The other sports not so much. You have to remember that most countries are significantly smaller than the US so they have niche sports or events. Romania with gymnastics, Cuba with boxing, etc. They just don't have the populations to produce world class athletes in many sports so they specialize, typically in individual rather than team sports.

Joe Atiyeh

Married the daughter of a Marcello associate. Owned a flea market down by the Pastime. Got shot in an armed robbery attempt and survived. Last I heard of him was when they legalized casinos his name showed up on one of the applications for a casino license.

His brother George also wrestled for LSU and was a defensive lineman on the football team.
He went back to Pennsylvania where they were from and some years later was pinched for running an illegal bookmaking operation.

Watching weightlifting live now. The 98kg boys are competing which is 211 lbs.

Fuzzy permed dude from Qatar wins with a 225 kg or 496.04 pounds in the clean and jerk. Snatched 177kg. Olympic record combined.

For Qatar, UAE, Kuwait, and Bahrain, there kind of has to be an asterisk because they simply naturalize who they want.
