Skiing Thread
Anyone else watching NBCSN? They are showing the live training sessions for skiing, men's downhill in particular. That will be a medal event on Saturday night in primetime.

Bode Miller is the color guy. He's been very good so far in explaining things. The play by play guy is Dan Hicks who does the swimming events in the summer games.

Some unknown American guy named Bryce Bennett just put down a really good practice time and seemed really relaxed afterwards. Knowing US skiers and the downhill, he may be one to watch in two days.

re: Skiing Thread
I was at the Hahnenkamm a couple weeks ago and it was one of the greatest sporting events I have ever attended....and the US men's downhill is a mess, so expect nothing there unless as you have said that Ligety can push through and medal in the Giant Slalom. I just cannot see anything else. Bennett, Goldberg, etc have taken too many tumbles this year for me to have any confidence.

We may get lucky and get a top 10 in the slalom, but that would take a great day. Hirscher, Kristofferson are Gold/SIlver depending on the day in the slaloms. In the downhill, I am expecting Beat Feuz (Swiss) or my darkhorse Peter Fill (Italy).

For the ladies, Vonn is skiing strong, but Goggia of Italy had the better times in South Korea runs last year. So that is the race there.

As for the slalom, I am hoping that Mikaela has not lost her confidence. In the last race at Garmisch she missed one of the last gates on the course. After all the other crashes and misses lately, I went from very confident for two golds for her, to hoping for one.

Shame that Jackie Wiles fractured her lag last week at Garmisch as she was really coming on.

But will pray for miracles

re: Skiing Thread
Was reading this morning that a lot of skiers are trashing their skis after just one run because the snow is so cold there. Something about how sharp the snow crystals get in colder weather, which warps the skis. Kinda crazy.

The projected temp at the opening ceremonies is -10 F.

Our downhill team has been pretty weak all season so I’m not expecting much, I think this will be a rough games for us. Hopefully they prove me wrong though

Totes jelly brah. That's on my bucket list.

In another forum with some connected skiing people, there seemed to be a lot of worry about Shiffrin's head. I hope the fricking media lays off the hype on her a little bit and lets her do her thing. She's an amazing skier -- every video frame is a clinic in perfection.

As always, rarely a frick to give when it comes to telling the truth vs sugar coating.

Edit: I fully expect him to say at some point, "Well that run really sucked."

I need to do a travel report for the ski trip I did.

But to increase your desire to go, after the Downhill, the better half and I went into the Londoner Pub.

Mind you, they were charging 60 Euro entrance (thought they were joking while in line), but since we were americans, they only charged us 60 for the both of us ...but when I got inside, the day was worth it.

So, the pub will play a National anthem from a country then a popular song, such as the SWedish National Anthem and then an Abba song. The played the Star Spangle Banner and then Born in the USa....did not have the heart to tell them the meaning, just let them enjoy singing the chorus.

But literally, every 15-20 minutes, they would stop and say, welcome to X who was Y medalist at Z olympics. It was pretty cool, and those guys/girls were just drinking and hanging out.

But what i did not know was in comes Dressen (the winner of the Hahnenkamm) and he bartends for over an hour. It is a tradition that the winner of the race does it. It was crazy. So some crazy pictures of Bode Miller on the wall from his time bartending

So, do it. I went to all races, GS, Downhill, and Slalom.

re: Skiing Thread
He’s 33 and could easily pull a run out of his arse for a medal. My worth-nothing prediction:

Feuz, Svindal, Paris

Darkhorse watch out for Kilde.

re: Skiing Thread
Same time (in Korea) on Thursday. So wednesday night for us. Apparently the bad weather is supposed to continue for a few days. Upcoming events are Women’s GS, Men’s Combined and Women’s Slalom. Downhill training tomorrow for Combined has also been canceled.

re: Skiing Thread
Up next: the women’s Giant Slalom. Shiffrin among the contenders in a pretty wide open discipline. Worley won the last GS before the Games and Rebensburg and Brignone have been skiing well. This should be a fascinating race assuming the weather cooperates and Shiffrin has gotten the bugs out of her system.

I really like alpine skiing. Can someone let me know what channel and times the alpine skiing events are? I'll set my dvr accordingly.

Since Mikaela is skiing tonight...it is listed as main NBC.
