NBC is facing a cataclysmic loss of audience for the 2022 Winter Olympics as viewership tanked for Friday’s Opening Ceremony, averaging just 16 million.

It is a record low for the Opening Ceremony (20.1 million for 1988 in Calgary was the previous record) and a whopping 43 percent below the 2018 Games in South Korea that notched 28.3 million viewers despite also dealing with a less than advantageous Asian time zone for American audiences.

It comes on the heels of Thursday’s ratings disaster that saw just 7.7 million people tune in, dramatically below same-night audiences of 2018 (16 million) and 2014 from Russia (20.02 million).

It ended with China using cross country skier Dinigeer Yilamujiang, who the state run media said has Uyghur heritage, as one of the cauldron lighters. It was a clear counter to the claims of genocide — see, look at this smiling, celebrated Uyghur.

It was a disturbing and dispiriting moment, a young athlete and an iconic moment in every Olympics used as a propaganda prop to cover up a campaign of slavery, torture, forced abortions and internment in reeducation camps. It did nothing to build good feelings toward the competition.

As such, rather than a celebration, this feels, and looks, like a grind of hardship, isolation and suspicion.

I haven’t watched a single minute yet. And I’m usually a fairly avid viewer of Olympics. I’m not staging some political boycott or anything. Just kind of forgot it was on, the time zones suck, and with streaming services I don’t see constant commercials reminding me that the Olympics are on( thank goodness).

I’m not boycotting, but for whatever reason I don’t give a frick about these olympics

I think the time zone and lack of fans is just too much at this point. Sports without fans is horrific

Watching the skiing is so nostalgic for me. It really makes me miss that former life and hate my current one

This is kind of where I'm at. I would never miss the hockey tournament, but it's watered down. So IDGAF about any of the other sports this go round.

Frick China and NBC.

Watching it to support the athletes. It's not their fault the crooked IOC gives Olympics to the CCP. There is a definite pall over these Games and everything feels so phony. The backdrop is horrible, the ridiculous alpine ski hill and the freestyle ski jump set up in an industrial zone with massive concrete cooling towers in the backdrop is surreal. All the snow is fake, man-made snow because these Games are being held in a place with little snow. It's appropriate as it's phony just like everything else about this.

This. I love the Olympics and have been watching regularly.

This Olympics feels very different, like it's just kind of there. The lack of fans in the stands is surely part of it, but it didn't feel like this watching the summer Olympics.

No wind in the sails.

Politics aside, I don't know how any Olympic Opening Ceremony draws high ratings. It's BORING fluff and just as unwatchable as awards shows.

Not watching simply because I just did not want any political lectures. Then I saw pictures of people in full PPE head-to-toe and a sky jump big air next to a "steel" mill with cooling towers that looks like three mile island. I think I may pass and play my new xbox; but I know I will tune in with the wife for a few events.

THIS! End of story. The fans bring the energy to these events. I hope Paris is seeing this and make to where fans can go in 2024.

I've noticed the same here. I know that I've read that many of the big time corporate sponsors like Coca-Cola are distancing themselves from these games outside of China (they're still advertising heavily inside China). Is it possible NBC is allowing these games to fly under the radar and get to Paris without leaving a bad taste in people's mouths for the Olympics in general? I know they pay an ungodly amount of money to broadcast them, but I'm sure the summer games are where they really make most of that money back anyway.
