Favorite Olympic Memories
The Kerri Strug renaissance has me nostalgic for old Olympic memories.

Rulon Gardner getting bronze in 2004 followed by the emotional retirement and the leaving the boots behind was chilling. A perfect example of how you don’t have to win the gold medal to have a memorable and charming moment at the olympics.

2012 100 freestyle relay, Lezak rides the lane marker to run down the unbeatable Bernard of France. Made it possible for Phelps to win 8 and break Mark Spitz's record.

It was 2008 thanks for the correction jlove7

re: Favorite Olympic Memories
Not one specific moment, but I was sick for over a week in the summer of 1984 when the LA Olympics were going on. I laid on the couch watching them all day. A couple of memories from that one are the girl tripping the American in one of the track & field events. Mary Decker Sweeney I think was her name. Some marathon runner entering the Coliseum and suffering from heat exhaustion. She was stumbling all over the place trying to reach the finish line. Carl Lewis.

Looking back, they showed a LOT of track & field back then, or I was just sick the week a lot of track & field events happened.

Didn't he win 8 in 2008?

re: Favorite Olympic Memories
1996 was the Olympics I really got into above any others.

Some great memories from that one:

One last Gold for old man Lewis

Not 1996 and I didn't see it "live" but this always stuck with me, 1992 Barcelona British sprinter Derek Redmond pulls up lame and his father runs past security and helps him to the finish line. (I'm not crying, you're crying):

That one will always stick with me. I think she was Swiss and not prepared for the heat/humidity in LA. She was staggering, barely walking, but had enough presence of mind to tell people to get away from her and not touch her or else she would be DQ'd. She wanted to cross the line herself and officially finish.

I have a cousin who was a marathoner in the UK and he finished I think top 10 in both LA and Seoul. That was cool to see.

Another cool memory was going to a couple of the baseball games at old Fulton County stadium in '96. Going to the games were cool, but walking along the upper concourse looking out at the cauldron/flame and the edge of Olympic Stadium was cool.

Also went to some of the swimming events for the '96 Paralympcs, and man, that gives you an entirely new perspective on athletes and athletics.

That was Beijing 2008. That relay leg and Phelps beating Cavic by .01 in the 100 Fly are probably my two favorite moments.

I had actually raced against Cavic at a meet in Florida the summer prior, so seeing him nearly take down the GOAT was even more exciting for me. Also, when I say "raced" I mean "got my butt kicked in the same heat."

Going with some winter ones here:

Dan Jansen finally winning that gold in 94.

Sarah Hughes coming out of nowhere to win the ladies figure skating in 02. Reminded everyone that anyone can win especially after the conspiracy to award the Russians the gold in the pairs competition the week before.

Shaun White nailing his last ever Olympic halfpipe run to secure gold in 18.

I just looked it up and it was dehydration she was suffering, not heat exhaustion. Her mind was still there, but her body was giving up on her. Really cool she still finished and had no long term effects from it.

Rulon Gardner beating Korellin (sp?)

Michael Phelps game face after Le Clos acted like a douche

Basically all the Phelps events that were close calls

Anxiously waiting for US team to come out in the 96 olympics, I was about 7 and I could barely stay up to see them walk out

Yes, they said she was still sweating. She skipped the last water up station or something.

This is probably the single coolest moments I remember watching. Didn't think there was any way he was going to win it.
