You’re an 1890 lower middle class English citizen. You’re offered these 3 opportunities.

Which one do you choose (you have to move to the place, you can’t accept the offer and stay in Britain)

A) you are offered 2000 acres of tobacco-growing land in the British Protectorate of Bechuanaland in Southern Africa. As part of this offer, you also gain access to a nearby small mountain range rumored to hold diamonds. While rumors are unconfirmed, other hills within 100 miles were confirmed to have diamonds. This area also is a potential security concern, as BagammaNgwato tribe lands aren’t too far. You will have to likely bring your own security in some form LINK

B) you are offered 4000 acres of grazing land in the Queensland outback and as part of this offer, your supply and overhead costs are 65% reduced compared to other ranchers in the area

C) You are offered a huge fishery, 100 acres of non-economic residential land, and 250 acres of land you can do whatever you want with on the southern tip of the South Island of New Zealand

In 1890 almost everyone would pick A I would think.

B. No telling how many fist sized gold nuggets and opal specimens I could find on that 4K acres. Would gladly take the profit and buy up adjacent land. No brainer. And assuming the land has water for the stock? Total gamechanger for the mining ops. Will be rich as frick.

It’s impossible not to base our decisions on what we know in 2021. We already know it.

Having said that, I would pick A. Lots of land means lots of opportunities. I would also hire some sort of security to patrol estate.

Impossible.

But I’m going with choice A if I’m an Englishman in 1890. Ranching and fishing is hard work with the land being your only chance at generational wealth. South Africa gets you land and diamonds.

I’m also assuming men in 1890 weren’t scared bitches and ambitious men would deal with unruly primitives in the way of them making money.

B

At that point Australia was becoming well settled, and in South Africa the Boers are still causing problems for the Brits. C is a nonstarter if I’m a lower middle clsss Brit. I probably have no experience fishing and that area is so remote that I probably won’t have fellow countrymen to help me out.

That edit changes the answer.

Almost every one in 1890 would have chosen A. It’s not even a question.

Given 2021 hindsight, A would be last.

True, but you could always take the offer, make some money, and then move when the British lose control of the area.

Call me for some steers to help feed your fishery hands. I can even sell you some pairs and a couple of bulls to pasture on the NZ lowlands. Perfect side biz. We can even start a shipping and trade route together between the mainland and NZ. Whore smuggling, etc.

We won’t need to smuggle the whores. They’ll come to the plunder.

That's an interesting thought. Your plundering. I'm thinking we could run a Lloyds of London insurance scam pretty easily. Fake cargo records that I insure. You plunder the ships. I collect and we agree to a % of the claim. Then, resell the cargo that are the actual goods.
